Organizational context: This temporary role is within the Global Alliance Unit of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva. The unit is part of the Executive Direction and Management Division, focused on mobilizing support for human rights. The position contributes to the strategic objectives of a time-bound initiative marking the 80th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Job purpose: The Human Rights Officer's purpose is to substantively contribute to the development, coordination, and operationalization of the Global Alliance for Human Rights' strategic objectives. This involves fostering stakeholder engagement, driving advocacy efforts, managing innovative projects, and ensuring substantive human rights work. The role supports the Coordinator in translating strategic direction into actionable plans, managing partnerships, and mobilizing resources. Key contributions include developing and maintaining partnerships, supporting catalytic initiatives, providing advisory support, contributing to resource mobilization and outreach, and managing project implementation to advance the Alliance's goals and ensure compliance with organizational standards.
Responsibilities: Develop and curate partnership-building activities, identifying, developing, and maintaining relationships with diverse stakeholders and donors. Support catalytic initiatives and activations by translating strategic direction into work plans and deliverables. Provide advisory and substantive support to counterparts for human rights initiatives. Contribute to resource mobilization and outreach by developing proposals and managing funding mechanisms. Engage in advocacy, communications, events, and reporting, collecting and analyzing engagement data. Support programming and project management by tracking activities, managing timelines, and ensuring compliance. Contribute to data analysis and management, including developing human rights indicators. Manage junior staff, consultants, and contractors as required.
Education: An advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in human rights, law, political science, international relations, social sciences, public policy, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree with two additional years of qualifying work experience may substitute for the advanced degree.
Work experience: A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in human rights or related fields is required. Essential experience includes partnership-building, stakeholder engagement for global campaigns, programme management within international organizations, and data management. Experience with international human rights mechanisms is also required. Desirable experience includes managing a team and supporting high-level events.
