Organizational context: This position is within the Global Alliance Unit of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, Switzerland. The role reports to the Coordinator of the Global Alliance for Human Rights, a special initiative focused on mobilizing support for human rights in commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Job purpose: The Communications Officer will develop and implement campaign strategies to enhance awareness, mobilize support, and secure resources for the Global Alliance's objectives. This involves crafting compelling narratives and messaging across various channels, creating diverse content (digital, print, social media, multimedia), and building strategic partnerships to amplify advocacy efforts. The role also supports fundraising activities, donor communications, regional coordination of communications, and team management, including hiring, training, and performance evaluation, to ensure the successful execution of the Global Alliance's mission and promote professional development within the team.
Responsibilities: Develop and execute comprehensive campaign strategies to increase awareness, mobilize support, and secure resources aligned with organizational policies and the Global Alliance's goals. Craft compelling narratives and messaging for diverse audiences across multiple platforms. Create engaging content, including digital assets, print materials, social media posts, email communications, and multimedia content. Cultivate and maintain relationships with partners to amplify advocacy messages at all levels. Oversee narrative change and strategic advocacy initiatives to bolster public support for human rights. Support fundraising efforts and donor communications. Coordinate the regional implementation of communications strategies. Manage and lead a team, overseeing recruitment, training, task assignment, performance evaluation, and deadline adherence, while fostering professional growth and a positive team culture.
Education: An advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, digital communications, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree combined with two additional years of relevant experience may substitute for the advanced degree.
Work experience: A minimum of seven years of experience in communications, international relations, or related fields is required. This includes at least five years of experience in communication and external relations within the United Nations or similar international organizations. Experience in campaign management, strategic advocacy, narrative change, and fundraising/donor communication is essential. Experience managing consultants and external creative agencies is desirable.
