Responsibilities

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Residential Coordinator, the Complex Care Worker (CCW) will perform various tasks related to client care, activity monitoring and general program support. The CCW is the front line of supervisory, professional care within a safe and supportive living environment for adults with a developmental/intellectual disability, mental health and multiple complex needs. The CCW ensures that the standards of excellence are met in a positive living environment with particular attention to residents’ safety, health, well-being, individual service plans (ISPs) and behavioural support plans (BSPs).

The CCW’s attitudes and behaviour must exemplify a high degree of resourcefulness and respect in meeting the varied, often multiple, needs of the residents. The residents of the JTH have complex needs and are high risk; they may present with behaviours that challenge or create crisis situations. As a result, the working environment can be stressful and there is a risk of resident’s physically acting out.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Mediate conflicts and de-escalate crisis situations using Non-Violent Crisis Intervention techniques, and/or ASIST, and/or First Aid/CPR.
  • Provide personal support and assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs/IADLs) that are appropriate to the needs of the individual(s) served. This includes but is not limited to personal care (toileting, bathing, feeding, grooming, etc.), social interaction, inclusion in the community behaviour intervention and house keeping.
  • Foster the development and mastery of life skills, including meal preparation, nutrition, laundry, shopping, budgeting and communication; based on person centred planning.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a consistent manner that supports the implementation and maintenance of a resident’s ISPs and BSPs.
  • Provide accompaniment and support to foster community integration and inclusion, by assisting residents to participate in activities in the community which are appropriate to the age and interests of the individual, encourages new interests, and helps facilitate a process whereby people make and sustain connections in the community.
  • Preparation of all meals and snacks; in accordance with the Canadian Food Guide and resident preferences and need.
  • Ensure the safety and security of residents, staff, the residence and members of the community.
  • Ensure proper handling and administration of medication (training provided).
  • Ensure that daily documentation is completed (i.e. Shift logs, behaviour tracking, occurrence reporting, resident updates, etc.).
  • Liaise with bail workers, probation officers, parole officers and local police to support any conditions of release prescribed to a resident.
  • Liaise with families and supports to plan for visits and/or time away.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings on a regular basis.
Qualifications

Education:

  • University Degree/College Diploma in a Psychology, Social Work or Social Services program, Developmental Service Worker Diploma OR Equivalent Experience.

Preferred Experience:

  • One (1) to Three (3) years of experience working with clients with development disabilities and/or mental health with behavioural challenges and complex needs.
  • Experience working in a residential setting.
  • Experience and comfort with crisis de-escalation and challenging behaviours.

Training:

  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention & Physical Intervention Skills and Restraint Training (NVCI/CPI/QBS/UMAB/Safe Management)
  • First Aid/CPR/AED (Level C)

Language:

  • Other languages will be considered an asset

Other Requirements:

  • Must be able to work and maintain alertness on 12-hour shifts; including days, overnights, weekends and holidays
  • Must be available to work statutory holidays.
  • Ability to cope with challenging situations and clients
  • Successful completion of a Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Current or Recent Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and Physical Intervention Skills & Restraint Training (CPI/NVCI/QBS/UMAB/Safe Management)

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to manipulate (push, pull, drag, etc.) 100 lbs.
  • Ability to complete a high degree of physical activity involving various activities and tasks; such as walking, standing, running, bending, lifting, household maintenance activities.
  • Ability to aide in the provision of physical assistance to people with disabilities as required.
  • The ability to apply approved physical interventions and restraints; as per BSPs or approved/trained techniques for crisis situations.

Health and Safety:

  • Ability to effectively and appropriately implement behavioural intervention plans and protocols under the direction of the Clinical Team (Psychiatrist, Psychologist, Behavioural Technician, Registered Nurse, Case Manager).
  • Occasional exposure to communicable diseases; Ability to follow protocols and procedures for infections prevention and control.

  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with staff, peers, program partners and industry contacts in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability.
  • Demonstrated ability to assist individuals achieve their personal goals through person directed planning.
  • Strong understanding of recovery principles and their application to individuals with developmental disabilities, mental illness and complex needs.
  • Experience supporting individuals with concurrent disorders, physical, mental and cognitive challenges.
  • Demonstrated understanding of positive behaviour supports.
  • Understanding of best practices and philosophies in service provision to individuals with complex needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to self-motivate and utilize down-time in an effective manner.
