Job description

Chief Administrative Officer
Pictou Landing First Nation

Shape the Future of Pictou Landing First Nation – Lead with Vision!

Pictou Landing First Nation, a proud Mi’kmaq community on the picturesque shores of Pictou Harbour, Nova Scotia, is at a key moment in its journey toward growth and strengthening. With deep cultural roots and a strong sense of identity, this resilient community is dedicated to building a sustainable future through innovation and dynamic leadership. We are seeking a proactive, purpose-driven Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) to bring renewed energy and direction to the community—someone who can provide strategic guidance, create structure, and champion the community’s ambitions. As CAO, you will be at the forefront, leading efforts to enhance social, economic, and cultural development, and ensuring the community continues to thrive and grow.

What Pictou Landing Offers: Pictou Landing First Nation is a thriving community with a strong sense of identity and purpose. The community is focused on enhancing its infrastructure, expanding educational opportunities, promoting health and wellness, and driving economic development. With a commitment to cultural preservation and community well-being, Pictou Landing offers a unique blend of tradition and progress, providing an inspiring environment for both residents and leaders.

Your Role: As CAO, you will take a hands-on approach to leadership, driving collaboration and ensuring a focus on achieving tangible results for the community. Reporting directly to the Chief and Council, you will oversee operations and programs across key areas, including Finance, Maintenance, Human Resources, Education, Social Services, Health, Capital, Housing, Economic Development, and Land Resource Management. In this pivotal role, you will lead the senior management team, guide strategic planning efforts, and ensure the successful implementation of community initiatives. Your leadership will be crucial in fostering strong relationships with federal, provincial, and First Nation agencies, all while advancing the mission and objectives of Pictou Landing First Nation.

Qualifications:

• A degree in Public Administration, Business, or a related field, coupled with proven leadership experience at a senior level.

• Demonstrated expertise in strategic leadership, community planning, financial management, and team building.

• Strong mentorship and coaching abilities, with a focus on developing and guiding team members.

• Proficiency in people management & conflict resolution, ensuring effective handling of disputes and fostering a collaborative work environment.

• Results-oriented approach with a hands-on leadership style, driving initiatives with tangible outcomes.

• Cultural competence and an appreciation for Mi’kmaq traditions and values.

• Experience in project management, policy development, and government relations.

• Demonstrated ability to remain calm, patient, and level-headed in high-pressure situations, ensuring effective decision-making and leadership.

• Experience in a First Nations management-level role is considered an asset.
