Project Delivery Lead - Digital Port Solutions

Wärtsilä is a world leader in marine technology and leading the industry's transformation towards a decarbonised and sustainable future. With the world’s widest portfolio and service network, we – Wärtsilians – deliver efficient, safe and sustainable integrated products and solutions to enhance the business of our customers. The opportunities presented through digitalisation and new technologies are offering a new era of shipping. Did you know that shipping is the world’s most efficient mode of transportation and that 88% of the world's trade is carried by sea?

We want to change the course towards an interconnected and cleaner maritime future and are constantly on the lookout for future‑oriented talent to join our team and to work towards enabling sustainable societies through innovation in technology and services – together. Are you ready to jump onboard?

The Project Delivery Lead – Digital Port Solutions is a senior delivery professional responsible for leading complex port‑digitalisation projects across our global portfolio, including PMIS, Pilotage Dispatch, Port Community System integrations, and mobile applications for marine service providers.

This role provides hands‑on leadership to Business Analysts, Project Managers (PM), and technical specialists. It ensures robust project governance, customer satisfaction, solution quality, and strong coordination across multi‑disciplinary teams.

The ideal candidate brings direct port‑industry experience, preferably with hands‑on involvement in harbour master operations, port authority digital projects, pilotage, towage, berth planning, or marine operations. They must have experience delivering multi‑phase digital transformation projects with operational and technical complexity.

This position requires the successful candidate to work on‑site at our downtown Vancouver office four days per week.

Key Responsibilities

1. Project Leadership & Delivery Execution

Lead end‑to‑end delivery of Digital Port Solutions (PMIS, Pilotage Dispatch, mobile apps, PCS integrations).

Oversee project planning, execution, monitoring, risk management, schedule tracking, and milestone delivery.

Establish strong governance routines and transparent project reporting.

Drive cross‑functional alignment and remove delivery roadblocks.

2. Team Leadership & Capability Development

Provide leadership and coaching to Business Analysts, Project Managers, and technical workstreams.

Strengthen delivery methodology, templates, and internal standards.

Support onboarding, knowledge transfer, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Act as the primary delivery focal point for Harbour Masters, Port IT, Marine Operations, Pilots, and senior port stakeholders.

Build trusted customer relationships and manage expectations within complex environments.

Lead steering committee meetings, requirement clarification sessions, and high‑level scope discussions.

4. Technical & Domain Understanding

Strong understanding of port operational workflows: vessel calls, berth planning, pilotage, towage, marine services, billing, port‑call optimisation.

Work closely with architects and SMEs to ensure technical feasibility and alignment.

Supervise and manage delivery margins, cost tracking, invoicing milestones, and change orders.

Ensure compliance with contractual commitments and support commercial clarifications.

Contribute to pre‑sales by providing delivery estimates, risk analysis, and resource planning.

Enhance delivery playbooks, templates, and best practices for repeatable execution.

Incorporate learnings from global port projects to improve predictability and quality.

Required Qualifications & Experience

10+ years’ experience delivering complex digital projects in maritime/port or similar operational environments.

Hands‑on experience in delivering port‑related digitalization projects is highly preferred:

  • PMIS
  • Pilotage or towage digital solutions
  • Port call or berth planning
  • Port Community System or marine service digitalisation

Proven leadership of Business Analysts and Project Managers.

Strong stakeholder management with port operational and executive teams.

Experience managing multi‑year, multi‑stream delivery programs.

Ability and willingness to travel up to 20% of the time, both domestically and internationally.

Preferred
  • PMP or equivalent certification.
  • Business Analysis certification (IIBA – CBAP/CCBA/ECBA, PMI‑PBA, etc.).
  • Port‑related professional certifications (port operations, harbour management, marine logistics, port‑project delivery).
  • Previous operational or project experience in a port authority, harbour master’s office, pilotage organisation, or marine operations context.
  • Experience with integration‑heavy solutions (TOS/N4, ERP, PCS, GIS).
  • Strong capability working with global distributed teams.
  • Clear leadership and communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and structured problem‑solving mindset.
  • Ability to manage complexity and bring clarity to ambiguous situations.
  • Customer‑centric with strong stakeholder alignment skills.
  • Resilient, organised, and capable of managing competing priorities.
