Manufacturing Engineering Specialist - Parts and Kits

We are recruiting for a Manufacturing Engineering Specialist - Parts and Kits for our location in Peterborough, ON.BWXT NEC's Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group is involved in the design, manufacture, development, testing, parts supply, and service of on-power refueling, reactor maintenance, and nuclear medicine delivery tooling sold around the world. We are the original designer of the automated systems that allow 24/7 on power refueling of CANDU reactors and aim to solve some of the Nuclear Industry’s most challenging problems. Today, BWXT’s equipment is being used in most of the nuclear power plants in Canada and is critical to delivering carbon free energy production and lifesaving medical isotopes.

Our Role:

Reporting to the Parts and Kits Manager, the Manufacturing Engineering Specialist is responsible for the estimating and execution of a broad range of manufacturing projects from commercial to custom manufactured parts.

Accountabilities:

• Prepare detailed cost estimates for custom-engineered parts and kits.
• Provide manufacturing inputs to the design process, participate in manufacturability reviews to identify manufacturing cost or schedule improvements during product design.
• Plan and lead jobs through manufacturing.
• Write instructions (shop travelers) for in-house activities, manufacturing sketches, weld map records, assembly/test specs, etc. Identify, design and procure fixtures and required tooling.
• Prepare Manufacturing Bills of Material from engineering BOM’s, on JD Edwards MRP system. Perform make vs buy evaluations. Requisition purchased parts and materials for in-house manufactured items.
• Manage design changes and maintain configuration of the design during manufacturing.
• Lead and participate in project meetings related to schedules and budgets including meetings with customers.
• Prepare schedule inputs for projects including task planning to optimize lead times.
• Troubleshoot production problems with design and manufacturing teams, including recommending dispositions for non-conformances.
• Lead or participate in teams carrying out work at customer sites.
• Drive continuous improvement of manufacturing activities.

Qualifications:

• College Graduate in a Technical or Manufacturing Discipline, or Skilled Trade.
• 5+ years of manufacturing planning experience in custom engineered equipment industry
• Knowledge and experience with machining (conventional + CNC/CAM), fitting/welding, assembly and materials including stainless steels, Al-bronze, nickel alloys, zirconium, etc.
• Experience with instrumentation and control equipment, PLCs, automation, wiring diagrams, electrical schematics.
• Knowledge or experience with metrology, Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerances (GD&T), blue print reading.
• High level of proficiency with data analysis and management including spreadsheet tools, MRP systems, etc.
• Demonstrated ability in project planning / execution, including development of processes / procedures and process improvements.
• Very strong communication and interpersonal skills

Desired Characteristics:

• Basic knowledge of common non-destructive examination (NDE) techniques.
• Experience working with ASME Code rules for identification and traceability of materials, manufacturing processes, testing etc.
• Technical writing experience including procedures, customer proposals, technical reports.
• Experience in cost-estimating multi-disciplined equipment and facility projects.
• Experience with Primavera (P6) project scheduling software.
• Experience in the nuclear industry is considered an asset but not required.

The base salary range for this position in Ontario at the start of employment is expected to be between $73,000 and $106,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment.
