Job summary

City of Penticton is seeking a permanent full-time Works Maintenance III (E.O.II) based in Penticton, BC. You will support public works crews, operate light equipment and assist with road and drainage projects.

The role requires reading plans, physical endurance and good communication. A BC Class 5 license and related certificates are assets. Benefits include health, vacation, sick leave, and parking at a waterfront city with a strong, community-focused culture.

The City of Penticton is looking for a permanent full-time Works Maintenance III (E.O.II)based in Penticton, B.C.

The City of Penticton Public Works Department is in search of a highly skilled, energetic and motivated individual for the position of Works Maintenance III (E.O.II). The Works Maintenance III position report to the Roads Foreman and the Roads and Drainage Supervisor. The Works Maintenance III position provides skilled labor assistance as required to all work crews including the operation of various light equipment and small hand tools as assigned. These positions may also be focused on restorative work to remediate City properties including but not limited to vagrant camps and waste clean ups (additional training will be provided).

Key Responsibilities:

• Skilled Public Works duties include, assisting all work crews, administering the street crack and crevice weed control program, sidewalk inspection program, vagrant camps clean up, waste clean ups, etc.
• Operates equipment including but not limited to: single axle dump truck with attachments, pickup truck, aerial bucket truck, mobile crane truck, portable generator, cut saw, jackhammer, chainsaw, weed-eater, backpack blower, tampers, plate compactor, compressor, and other various small hand tools.
• Performs snow removal duties, and other various Public Works duties.

Required Knowledge, Abilities & Skills:

• Ability to read, understand and interpret construction plans and specifications.
• Good physical condition with sufficient strength and stamina to perform heavy manual work outside in the presence of all types of weather conditions.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to effectively plan and prioritize assigned tasks and duties.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to deal with people in a courteous and professional manner.
• Ability to work co‑operatively or independently, problem solve and exercise sound judgement.
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.

Required Education, Training & Experience:

• Completion of Secondary School or equivalent
• Valid B.C. Driver’s License – Minimum of Class 5. Air Brake Endorsement and/or Class 3 considered an asset
• Valid Traffic Control Person Certification considered an asset
• Valid Industrial Vegetation and Noxious Weed Applicator Certificates considered an asset
• Valid Forklift Certification considered an asset
• Any other related workplace certificates: WHMIS, First Aid, Confined Space, Ground Disturbance, Fall Arrest are considered an asset

Note: These positions will have one of the following fortnight schedules depending on departmental requirements;

• Wednesday to Saturday – alternating Wednesdays off
• Spring (April 15th – Oct 31st) 5:00 am to 2:30 pm
• Winter (Nov 1st to April 14th) 6:00 am to 3:30 pm
• Saturday to Wednesday – alternating Wednesdays off
• Spring (April 15th – Oct 31st) 5:00 am to 2:30 pm
• Winter (Nov 1st to April 14th) 6:00 am to 3:30 pm
