Job description

Wildlife Rehabilitation Assistant Supervisor

The Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary (RVWS) is a registered charity located between North Gower and Kemptville, Ontario. RVWS rehabilitates up to 1,000 injured, sick or orphaned wild mammals and turtles annually with the goal of returning them to the wild. RVWS also provides advice to the public on co-existing peacefully with wildlife, and preventing and solving wildlife problems.

As an Assistant Operations Manager, support the Executive Director and Senior Managers, and coordinate duties with other Assistant Supervisors with:

Leadership:
  1. Maintain a positive, healthy and safe work environment.
  2. Uphold organizational policies, procedures, and practices.
  3. Help train, supervise, and mentor wildlife rehabilitation summer students, administrative officer, administrative support officer, construction labourer, construction helper, and volunteers.
Wildlife Rehabilitation Operations:
  1. Oversee overall wildlife rehabilitation operations to ensure that patient welfare meets the highest standards.
  2. Oversee veterinary care and follow-up.
  3. Coordinate identification of appropriate release sites and coordinate releases.
  4. Oversee the education and volunteer programs.
  5. Oversee maintenance of facility, equipment, and caging.
  6. Oversee inventory and ordering of supplies, equipment, and caging.
  7. Oversee record-keeping and contribute to reporting.
  8. Liaise with MNR, and coordinate reporting and inspections.
Animal Care:
  1. Feed animals and clean cages.
  2. Update medical, diet, and other treatment plans.
  3. Ensure treatment plans are being administered properly.
  4. Respond to animal emergencies.
  5. Communicate issues or concerns to supervisors.
  6. Clean and disinfect rehab supplies and equipment, and indoor and outdoor facilities.
Provide Advanced Animal Care:
  1. Admit and assess new cases.
  2. Develop treatment plans for new patients.
  3. Administer medications, fluids, and other treatments.
  4. Attend to sick or priority cases.
  5. Assist at veterinary appointments.
Human Resources:
  1. Help oversee the training and scheduling of staff and volunteers.
  2. Help oversee staff and volunteer hours and expense reporting.
  3. Help with volunteer and staff performance reviews.
Communications and Outreach:
  1. Oversee client communications, including the wildlife hotline, emails, and visits.
  2. Oversee and contribute articles for newsletters, e-news, social media, and other communications.
  3. Assist with fundraising and outreach activities as required.
  4. Regularly take and upload photos and videos of wildlife patients.
Finances:
  1. Oversee the recording and safe-keeping of walk-in client donations.
  2. Assist with financial reporting.

Other related responsibilities as required.

Eligibility Requirements:

These jobs are made possible under the Canada Summer Jobs program. To be eligible under the program, youth must:

  1. Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment.
  2. Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
  3. Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

International students are not eligible participants.

Qualifications:
  1. Experience in wildlife rehabilitation.
  2. Enrollment in a post-secondary institution in veterinary or animal-related studies.
  3. Experience in supervising staff or volunteers.
  4. Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle (there is no public transit to our facility in North Gower).
  5. Proof of double Covid vaccination, tetanus vaccination within the last 10 years, and rabies vaccination within the past 2 years or proof of adequate titre levels.
  6. Proven verbal and written English communication skills.
  7. Exceptional planning, organizing, and problem-solving skills.
  8. Ability to meet tight and evolving deadlines, through the use of strong organizational and time management skills.
  9. Exceptional interpersonal and teamwork skills, and the ability to motivate others.
  10. Ability to thrive and remain calm in a high-energy, challenging environment.
  11. Ability to set priorities and work under pressure.
  12. Ability to work independently under little supervision once trained.
  13. Ability to meet physical demands of the job, such as heavy lifting and working outdoors in all kinds of weather.
Term and Compensation:

This is a 35-40 hr/wk position to begin as early as April 22 for 8 to 16 weeks. Wages are $20.00/hr. Some shift work, weekends, and evenings are required. This is an essential on-site position.

A limited number of shared, on-site accommodations are available for out-of-town applicants.
