The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) seeks a Water Technologist to join the Science Team within the Regulatory Applications Branch. Salary Range: T2, Level 4, $80,580 - $94,800 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

The Opportunity

Are you someone who thinks critically, takes initiative, and works collaboratively to make things happen? Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is currently seeking a Water Technologist to join our talented team of professionals within the Science Team of the Regulatory Applications (RA) Branch. The Water Technologist will support the Senior Advisor, Hydrology and other water subject matter experts by analyzing, organizing and creating data and tools to efficiently support water management. You'll process Temporary Diversion Licences, complete routine hydrology reviews and audits to ensure completeness, accuracy and ensure that risks to water are mitigated under the Water Act. This role will also contribute to annual water reporting published by the AER. Utilizing strong interpersonal and communication skills, the Water Technologist will interact with technical professionals internally and externally, stakeholders and government.

What your day-to-day will look like:
  • Apply risk-based review principles and make recommendations within target timelines for Temporary Diversion Licence applications and hydrology referrals, including drafting approvals with case-specific conditions, seeking guidance from senior team members as required.
  • Perform audit activities and approval/licence maintenance, including occasional site visits, annual reports and submissions, and making recommendations on operators' performance and compliance to application requirements. Contribute to water reporting programs.
  • Conduct data analysis, use modern AI-assisted development tools to build simple applications, automate repetitive tasks, develop dashboards and workflows, and create practical solutions that improve the efficiency of water management processes.
  • Contribute to GIS advisories. Participate in low flow management and communicate outcomes to internal teams.
What we're looking for in you:
  • Technical diploma in a science, engineering or related discipline.
  • 3+ years of related industry or regulatory experience with a focus on water preferred.
  • Understanding of Alberta's regulatory framework for water allocation and use and how to apply those requirements to various application scenarios.
  • Basic programming skills are an asset but not required. We are looking for individuals who are curious, resourceful and eager to develop new technical skills.
  • Intermediate knowledge of hydrological principles.
  • Highly motivated with the ability to work well both independently as well as part of a team.
