Job summary

The City of Edmonton is seeking a Waste System Educator to independently deliver waste-related education programs to diverse student and adult audiences, including tours of the Edmonton Waste Management Centre and livestream theatre sessions.

You will develop and update education programs, assist with event planning, respond to public inquiries, and help communicate Edmonton’s waste initiatives while upholding equity, diversity and inclusion.

Qualifications

  • Completion of the first year of a Diploma or Degree program in Education, Environmental Science or a related field.
  • Minimum of one year demonstrated experience in facilitating and delivering education programs to diverse audiences.

The mission of the Waste Education and Outreach (WEO) team is to inform, engage, and empower Edmontonians to be knowledgeable about and fully participate in the City’s waste management system. The Waste System Educator is an important part of the WEO team, as it expertly and independently delivers a variety of waste-related education programs to diverse student and adult audiences (grade, age, learning needs, language levels, etc.) and educates residents about Edmonton’s waste system at public outreach events.

What will you do?
  • Utilize an array of engagement strategies and materials to independently deliver tours of Edmonton Waste Management Centre to students in elementary, junior high and senior high grades
  • Deliver a range of education programs to diverse audiences using a livestream theatre
  • Assist with outreach event planning, set up, and take down including generating ideas for booths, gathering materials, and developing props and displays
  • Share information about Edmonton’s waste system, initiatives and education programs while engaging the public
  • Support the WEO team in responding to public enquiries regarding The City of Edmonton's Waste services initiatives, waste system and waste reduction strategies. Includes written and verbal responses
  • Communicate with teachers confirming booking information is accurate and up to date using Google Calendar and a learning management system. Includes written and verbal responses
  • Conduct jurisdictional scans of provincial, national and international scope on waste-related topics and report findings
  • Collect and maintain statistics, analyze data and develop reports to support continuous improvement using surveys, evaluations, and other collection tools. Update statistical information on a learning management system
  • Identify opportunities for improvement and assist with planning, creating, and updating education programs, including in-person, livestream and e-learning
  • Assist Waste Learning Specialists with delivering public, business, government and specialty group tours of Edmonton Waste Management Centre
  • Stock, organize, repair and clean program materials, equipment and theater/gallery spaces
  • Assist with cleaning the bus used to deliver public tours and transport props, displays and equipment for outreach events
  • Other related duties as required
Qualifications
  • Completion of the first year of a Diploma or Degree program in Education, Environmental Science or a related field. Relevant education or experience may be considered
  • Minimum of one (1) year demonstrated experience in facilitating and delivering education programs to diverse audiences (ages, learning abilities/needs, language acquisition, cultural backgrounds/understandings, etc.)
Assets
  • Standard First Aid and CPR certificate
  • Valid Alberta Class 4 driver's license (or provincial equivalent)
  • Experience in performing arts or interpretation
Skills required for success
  • A thorough understanding of interpretative and educational strategies and techniques for engaging diverse learners and for de-escalating inappropriate behaviours or disrespectful interactions in safety sensitive and/or highly public settings
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both orally and written, as well as to deal courteously and tactfully with the public
  • Comfortable with public speaking to large groups
  • Ability to use respectful and inclusive approaches to build and maintain effective relationships
  • Ability to take direction as well as work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new technology. Competencies in Google Workspace (Forms, Docs, Gmail, Sheets, Slides)

Conditions of Employment
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Hire is dependent on Police Information check including a vulnerable sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton. There may be a cost associated with this requirement

Work Environment
  • Physical ability to safely perform the tasks of the role, including walking and standing for extended periods, climbing 25+ stair, bending and lifting up to 50 lbs
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance

Up to 1 part-time casual ongoing position

Hours of Work

Approximately 20-30 hours per week, Monday-Thursday; however a few weeks per year may be up to 39 hours and require Friday, evening and weekend work. Scheduled work will mostly align with the school year.

Salary

$23.183 - $28.647 (Hourly); $48,406.100 - $59,814.940 (Annually)
