Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Assign, supervise and participate in work by in-house custodial staff.

  • Maintain time/materials records and coordinate stock replenishment.
  • Revise crew schedules to meet emerging needs and absences.
  • Lead routine safety meetings and reinforce safety culture.
  • Report near-miss and safety incidents per procedures.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Job description

As the Lead Custodial Worker, you will provide lead hand supervision and participate in the cleaning and care of a number of designated buildings and civic occupied premises. In this role, you are a leader that will engage and motivate custodial staff while organizing and tracking the supplies and work to be completed.

Your success will be measured by your ability to achieve results in a respectful, inclusive and service-minded way.

What will you do?
  • Assign, supervise, and participate in the work performed by in-house custodial staff
  • Onboard new staff by orienting them to the custodial requirements
  • Provide hands on instruction in the proper use of supplies and equipment
  • Maintain records of time and materials used; coordinate replenishment of stock
  • Revise crew schedules as required to meet emerging needs and absences
  • Conduct routine safety meetings to provide necessary updates and reinforce the City’s safety culture
  • Responsible for reporting procedures for near miss and safety incidents
  • Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications:
  • Completion of Grade 12 (or equivalent) supplemented by completion of the Building Service Worker Program from a recognized post-secondary institution
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in custodial work including three (3) years in leadership role
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered
Assets:
  • Completion or enrolment in post-secondary education in Business Administration, Human Resources or related areas
  • IICRC Certification
  • Occupational Health and Safety credential

  • Able to understand, communicate, read and write English at a level needed to meet job-related task and safety requirements
  • Customer service driven; ability to interact professionally to meet demands
  • Ability to work with people of all levels within the organization in a professional manner and demonstrate trust and responsibility in the performance of duties
  • Ability to perform duties according to a work schedule and under minimum supervision
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions as well as standard methods, materials, tools and equipment employed in the custodial care and maintenance of buildings
  • Ability to train Staff in the use of Standard Operating Procedures and Equipment
  • Ability to supervise and evaluate work of staff
  • Experienced user of office software such as Google Workspace or equivalent

Conditions of Employment:
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Hire is dependent upon an Enhanced Security Clearance check by Edmonton Police Service satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit may be required for this position
  • Physical strength and the ability to perform the light and heavy custodial duties involving reaching, bending, lifting, squatting as well as using equipment and moving supplies and office furniture
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts on a 24/7 shift cycle (2 days off per week) at assigned City of Edmonton locations

  • This role requires the ability to work in various environments, including exposure to dust, noise and various weather conditions

Up to 1 permanent full-time position

Hours of Work:

40 hours per week, working varying shifts, 5 days per week, Sunday to Saturday, at various City facilities is a requirement

Salary Range:

$33.863 - $35.333(Hourly); $70,705.940 - $73,775.300 (Annually)
