Job summary

Nova Scotia Health is seeking a casual Utility Worker to maintain hospital cleanliness, including cleaning, mopping, dusting, and floor care across departments. Responsibilities include carpet shampooing, waste removal, spill cleanup, laundry tasks, room setup, and interior window cleaning.

Shifts may include days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays; typically casual relief with 0 guaranteed hours. Salary reflects hourly rates with health and pension benefits. Posting closes Aug 27, 2026.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12/GED or equivalent work experience required.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with cleaning and floor care experience.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain cleanliness of the hospital by cleaning, mopping and dusting all areas.
  • Perform floor care including scrubbing and waxing floors and carpet/chair shampooing.
  • Handle waste removal (hazardous and regular) and chemical spill cleanup.
  • Assist with laundry tasks, room set-ups, interior window cleaning and winter salt application.
  • Assist with isolation room cleaning and flood or bloodspill cleanup as needed.

About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Assistant Manager, the Utility Worker maintains the cleanliness of the hospital. Activities include cleaning, mopping and dusting all areas in the hospital. Other work would include floor care (scrubbing and waxing floors), shampooing of carpets and chairs, waste removal (hazardous waste and regular waste), chemical spill cleanup, laundry tasks, room set-ups, window cleaning (interior), some salt application during winter months, isolation room cleaning, flood and bloodspill clean ups.

Compensation and Benefits

$20.74 - $21.56 Hourly
