Job description

The swiya of the shíshálh people lies between Queens Reach in Jervis Inlet and Howe Sound on the south coast of British Columbia. Historically, there were four main settlements at kalpilin (Pender Harbour), ts’unay (Deserted Bay), xenichen (Jervis Inlet), and tewankw near Porpoise Bay. shíshálh Nation is committed to innovation in program and service delivery designed to assist our members and community to achieve greater independence, wellness, and self-sufficiency. Foundational to our shared work is the protection, promotion, and practice of shíshálh culture, language, and laws within our swiya.

The position of Summer Fun Transportation Assistant is an opportunity to connect with the Nation’s children (ages 5-11) in a recreational and educational manner and provide safe transport for them during summer programming. This position will be under the management of the Wellness Centre Manager, Wellness Centre Program Supervisor, and the general supervision of the Child Program Coordinator and other program leads. The Summer Fun Transportation Assistant will serve as a caring person in the child’s life and make themselves available to provide safe transport to and from programming for the summer.

The position is from June 23, 2025 – August 29, 2025. Hours are from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm (Monday – Friday).

The Candidate:
  • Supervise the loading and unloading of passengers according to safety protocols and passenger health needs as directed.
  • Communicate professionally with children & youth, families, staff, and others; provide general information and respond to inquiries of all passengers and their families.
  • Perform minor first aid and complete required forms as needed.
  • Maintain a record of concerns/incidents regarding any problems encountered during the transportation of passengers and notify the Supervisor immediately when safe to do so.
  • Observe all the road rules, including speed limits and safety regulations.
  • Always conduct oneself courteously and professionally.
  • Ensure Nation vehicles are fueled and ready for service.
  • Ensure cleanliness of Nation vehicles: cleaning and sanitizing as needed after trips; ensuring an adequate supply of face masks and hand sanitizer is available as required.
  • Ensure that all equipment regarding the vehicle is maintained according to the manufacturer’s guidelines and safety regulations. Plan and schedule vehicle maintenance and inspections.
  • Coordinate the repairs of vehicles with Nation departments and external providers as required.
  • Follow the Motor Vehicle Act and Regulations.

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:

  • Minimum Grade 10 education; High School Diploma or equivalent is desirable.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of driving experience.
  • Knowledge of the community and city is required.
  • Respect for, sensitivity towards, knowledge, and understanding of shíshálh culture and traditions.
  • Be able to lift 40 lbs. when necessary.
  • Minimum Class 4 license with a clear driver's abstract throughout employment.
  • Clear Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • CPR and First Aid Certificate.
