Job summary

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is seeking a Track Welder Trainee to support the Streetcar Infrastructure team. This 3-year training position begins as a Track Welder Trainee with day shifts and a 40-hour week, based mainly at Hillcrest with travel to other sites as needed.

The successful candidate will complete classroom and on‑the‑job training, advancing to Track Welder after 3 years, with wage progression to wage group 8 and eligibility to bid after the probation period.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 (technical) or equivalent.
  • Valid Ontario G license, ability to obtain DZ license.
  • Welding or track experience is an asset.
  • Able to follow verbal/written instructions and safety rules.
  • Willing to wear a respirator.
  • Knowledge of OHRC/AODA and accessibility requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Receive training for electric welding and acetylene cutting.
  • Be classified as Track Welder Trainee for up to 3 years with training provided.
  • Remove and replace pavement around rail as required.
  • Rebuild worn rail heads, guard rails on curves, trackwork and joints.
  • Perform thermite welding of rail ends and monitor welding activities.
  • Weld rings, bonds and cross bonds to trackwork joints.
  • Perform acetylene cutting as required.
  • Carry out emergency track repairs and maintenance.
  • Operate a truck to transport tools and crew to sites.
  • Complete 3-year trainee period before advancement.
