Job summary

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) invites applications for a Track Mechanic Trainee (13784) in Streetcar Infrastructure. This 18‑month program leads to a Track Mechanic with wage progression.

You will work night shifts, 40 hours a week, with Tuesdays and Wednesdays off, on-site in Toronto. A Grade 12 education and a valid Ontario G license are required; a DZ license is desirable. The TTC offers competitive compensation and benefits.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 education or equivalent per TTC.
  • Must complete all training to sustain trainee status.
  • Experience with hand and power tools is an asset.
  • Experience in track, trades or construction is an asset.
  • Must comprehend verbal and written instructions and follow safety regs.
  • Must have or rapidly acquire Ontario G license; DZ license desirable.
  • Comfortable with dirty, dusty, noisy, greasy environments.

Responsibilities

  • - Learn maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting and repair on track components.
  • - Learn to perform scheduled, running and emergency repairs on track systems.
  • - Set up and operate rail bending equipment and ensure proper fit.
  • - Maintain and troubleshoot track lubrication systems and related tools.

Our Streetcar Way team has an exciting opportunity for a Track Mechanic Trainee! This position involves working night shifts, with Tuesdays and Wednesdays as off days. You will be classified as a Track Mechanic Trainee for a period of 18 months, during which time the applicable training will be given.Upon successful completion of the classroom and on-the-job training, you will be re-classified as a Track Mechanic (Wage Group 8).

What You Will Do
  • You will receive training on the maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair work performed on tangent, curved and special track work, track switches and switch components, track bed, and track accessories.
  • You will learn and apply skills required to perform scheduled, running, and emergency repairs to the track work and/or components such as turn-outs, frog castings, rails, slip switches, mechanical and electro-mechanical switching equipment and the track bed/invert.
  • The work will also involve the setting-up and operation of rail bending equipment and assembling/adjusting to ensure proper fit.
  • Your training will also involve maintenance and troubleshooting on defective or inoperative track lubrication systems/equipment, small tools and snow removal components.
  • You will be required to report and log all track related issues to Supervisory staff.
  • You will demonstrate behaviours that support diversity, inclusion, and a respectful work and service environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

What Qualifications Do You Bring
  • A Grade 12 education or its recognized equivalent as determined by the assessment of education credentials by the TTC Operations Training Centre;
  • Must be able to attend and successfully complete all portions of the training to sustain the trainee status;
  • Basic experience and knowledge of hand and power tools is an asset.
  • Experience in track, trades or construction is an asset.
  • Must be able to comprehend verbal and written instructions as demonstrated by an ability to understand and follow published operating/safety regulations;
  • Must be able to speak clearly in order to exchange information and instructions with the Control Centres;
  • Must have a valid, non-probationary, Province of Ontario class "G" driver's license in good standing and be able to pass the written and practical tests required for a class “DZ” driver’s license;
  • Must have or rapidly acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders including disability accommodation and accessibility requirements pertaining to passengers and employees.
  • Must be comfortable with the following work conditions: maybe dirty, dusty, noisy, and greasy, in all possible weather conditions inside or outside; working in confined areas in awkward positions.
