Job summary

Surrey Police Service is seeking a Victims Services Case Worker as part of the Community Partnerships Support Section. The role involves crisis intervention, ongoing follow-up with crime victims, and coordination with police, fire personnel and community agencies to ensure access to resources.

Attendance at crime scenes and court is required, with potential exposure to stressful situations. The position is full-time, with a 40-hour work week, and entails emergency responses, referrals, safety

Qualifications

• Completion of Grade 12, supplemented by a post-secondary degree in a related field.
• A minimum of four years of directly related experience.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License with a safe driving record.
• Requires SPSSecurity Clearance and RCMP Reliability Status; polygraph examination.

Responsibilities

• Respond to emergencies and critical incidents at crime scenes, hospitals, homes or community locations.
• Coordinate emergency transportation to transition house or hospital for follow-up.
• Support victims and families during next-of-kin notifications and sensitive situations.
• Update clients on case progress, court outcomes and related processes with investigators and external agencies.
• Provide referrals and information about community resources and supports.
• Assess safety, develop safety plans, and monitor follow-up as appropriate.
• Assist with victim assistance program applications and victim impact statements.

POSITION OVERVIEW

SurreyPolice Service (SPS) has an exciting opportunity for a Regular Full-Time VictimServices Case Worker to join our Community Partnerships Support Section, withinthe Community Policing Bureau. Reporting to the Community Partnerships Manager,the incumbent, under the supervision of the manager, provides direct supportservices to crime and trauma victims and witnesses. Duties include providingcrisis intervention support and ongoing follow up to victims, family membersand witnesses in immediate aftermath of crime or trauma. The position alsoassists with emergency responses, referrals, court support and case updates.The Victim Services Case Worker works with police, fire personnel, andcommunity agencies to ensure victims’ safety and access to resources.Considerable independence of judgment is required to be exercised withinestablished guidelines and according to policies and procedures. The incumbentwill be required to attend crime scenes and court. May be exposed to bodilyfluids and highly stressful situations.

Schedule / Hours of Work

Theanticipated schedule for this position is 40 hours/week, non-standard workweek.Please note, the hours are subjectto change based on operational needs and adherence to the Collective Agreement.

• Responds to emergencies and critical incidentsat crime scenes, hospitals, homes, or community locations.
• Coordinates emergency transportation totransition house, residence etc. and accompanies sexual assault victims tohospitals for follow up.
• Assists members and emergency personnel bysupporting victims and families during next-of-kin notifications and othersensitive situations.
• In consultation with investigating officers,Crown Counsel and external agencies, updates clients on case progress, courtoutcomes, and related processes.
• Provides clients with referrals and informationabout available community and government resources/support services includingbut not limited to home and personal safety, non-criminal protection orders,and replacement of stolen or lost documents.
• Assesses client’s safety, develops safety plans,and ensures ongoing monitoring and follow-up where appropriate.
• Assists clients with crime victim assistanceprogram applications and victim impact statements and other required documents.
• Conducts court orientations, courtaccompaniment, courthouse tours, with victims and witnesses, includingemergency court accompaniment and Crown Counsel meetings.
• Establishes and maintains appropriate clientfile field notes, computerized documentation, and maintaining diary dates.
• Prepares correspondence, reports, andinformation summaries related to the work.
• Provides feedback on processes and proceduresrelated to the work.
• Provides or coordinates short-term emergencychildcare as needed.
• Engages in community outreach and conductspresentations to promote awareness of victim services and available supports.
• Presents information to the public staff andattends community meetings as requested by the Manager.
• Assists other staff in performing their duties.

QUALIFICATIONS

• This position requires both SPSSecurity Clearance and RCMP Reliability Status. All applicants must obtain andmaintain the required police security clearance throughout their employmentwith SPS, which includesa mandatory polygraph examination .
