Job summary

Definity is hiring a Technology Solutions Co‑op to gain hands‑on experience in data engineering, cloud platforms, and distributed architectures. You’ll work directly with the Big Data Team Lead, gaining exposure to data ingestion, file formats, and SQL in a modern cloud environment.

You'll contribute to real projects while learning Python, Spark, or Scala, and tools like Jira, Bitbucket, and Jenkins. This role emphasizes learning, collaboration, and practical impact within a supportive team.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in a full‑time co‑op program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• Foundational knowledge of data engineering concepts and interest in working with large‑scale data systems.
• Experience with programming languages such as Python, Spark, or Scala.
• Basic understanding of SQL and working with relational or cloud‑based databases.
• Exposure to cloud platforms (e.g., Google Cloud) or willingness to learn.
• Familiarity with data formats (AVRO, ORC, Parquet) and scripting/automation (Shell) is an asset.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and learning agility in a fast‑paced environment.
• Effective communication and documentation skills.
• Exposure to Jira, Bitbucket, Jenkins, or Confluence is an asset, with a collaborative team mindset.

• Documenting processes using Confluence.

What can you expect in this role?

We are looking for Technology Solutions Co‑op. Through this work, you will be utilizing both system analysis and technical skills. You will gain significant exposure to Data Engineering practices, exposure to distributed computing systems, and visibility into the business allowing you to understand policy lifecycle management and how distributed modern architectures are used to communicate to legacy‑based environments.

This is an ideal opportunity for third‑ and fourth‑year students. This position reports to the Big Data Team Lead and receives day‑to‑day supervision from the Project Manager and/or Technical Lead/Specialist.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Understanding Data Engineering concepts and related tools/technologies
• Preparing Data sample, performing Data ingestion and transforming Data in Google Cloud
• Working on different file formats (e.g. AVRO, ORC, Parquet) and data movement into and out of Cloud based DBs.
• Coding in either Python, Spark or Scala
• Writing Shell Scripts
• Preparing and executing SQL based queries
• Documenting process using Confluence
• Gaining experience of issue tracking (Jira), source code management (Bitbucket), continuous integrations and build tools (Jenkins), package management and testing framework

What You Bring

About Us

The hourly compensation for the role starts at $22.50 per hour and will increase based on factors including but not limited to, skills, education, experience, and the recommended rates as set by the respective educational institution.
