Job summary

Definity is offering a Winter 2027 co-op placement in Data Engineering. The role focuses on data ingestion, transformation in Google Cloud, and handling AVRO/ORC/Parquet formats with exposure to SQL and shell scripting.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in a full-time co-op program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• Foundational knowledge of data engineering concepts and interest in large-scale data systems.
• Experience with programming languages such as Python, Spark, or Scala.
• Basic understanding of SQL and cloud-based relational databases.
• Exposure to Google Cloud or willingness to learn; familiarity with data formats like AVRO/ORC/Parquet is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Understand Data Engineering concepts and related tools/technologies.
• Prepare data samples, perform ingestion and transform data in Google Cloud.
• Handle various file formats (AVRO, ORC, Parquet) and move data to/from cloud databases.
• Code in Python, Spark, or Scala.
• Write Shell scripts and SQL queries.
• Document processes using Confluence.
• Gain experience with Jira, Bitbucket, Jenkins and build tools; participate in CI/CD.

What can you expect in this role?

What you’ll be doing

• Understanding Data Engineering concepts and related tools/technologies
• Preparing Data sample, performing Data ingestion and transforming Data in Google Cloud
• Working on different file formats (e.g. AVRO, ORC, Parquet) and data movement into and out of Cloud based DBs.
• Coding in either Python, Spark or Scala
• Writing Shell Scripts
• Preparing and executing SQL based queries
• Documenting process using Confluence
• Gaining experience of issue tracking (Jira), source code management (Bitbucket), continuous integrations and build tools (Jenkins), package management and testing framework

What you bring

• Currently enrolled in a full-time co-op program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field
• Foundational knowledge of data engineering concepts and interest in working with large-scale data systems
• Experience with programming languages such as Python, Spark, or Scala
• Basic understanding of SQL and working with relational or cloud-based databases
• Exposure to cloud platforms (e.g., Google Cloud) or strong willingness to learn
• Familiarity with data formats (e.g., AVRO, ORC, Parquet) and scripting/automation (e.g., Shell) is an asset
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and learning agility in a fast-paced environment
• Effective communication and documentation skills
• Exposure to tools such as Jira, Bitbucket, Jenkins, or Confluence is an asset, with a collaborative team mindset

The hourly compensation for the role starts at $22.50 per hour and will increase based on factors including but not limited to, skills, education, experience, and the recommended rates as set by the respective educational institution.
