Job summary

The Government of Nunavut is seeking a Technical Specialist (Applications) in Iqaluit. Reporting to the Senior Technical Specialist Lead, you will administer and troubleshoot GN production applications, programs, and databases, including upgrades and patches, in a dedicated test environment.

You will provide Tier 2-3 support across multiple teams and may travel for onsite assistance. Candidates should have a Diploma in Informatics Technology, 5 years in technical support with Windows Server

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Informatics Technology or related field.
  • Five years’ experience in a technical support capacity in a Windows Server environment.
  • Three years administering SQL Server and Oracle databases.
  • Microsoft/Oracle certifications will be an asset; ITIL is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Install, administer, and monitor MS SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, and GN databases.
  • Test upgrades and patches in a UAT environment.
  • Contribute to postmortem analyses and incident prevention.
  • Provide Tier 2-3 support and mentor Tier 1 staff.
  • Support remote communities and travel for onsite assistance.
  • Coordinate with vendors and developers for troubleshooting.

Reporting toSenior Technical Specialist Lead within the IPS team, the Technical Specialist will be responsible for theadministration, maintenance, monitoring and troubleshooting of GN production applications, programs and databases as well as Installation and testing of these applications, programs and databases, including upgrades, service packs, and patches done in a separate User Acceptance Testing (UAT) environment. The incumbent will provide Tier 2-3 support to Tier 1-2 Technicians, Regional Technicians and a variety of end user departments specifically in support of these GN production applications and programs. The incumbent will specifically deal with vendors and developers of these applications, programs and databases when needed for troubleshooting.

  • Install, administer, maintain, and monitor MS SQL Server, MySQL and Oracle and proprietary databases in the GN production and test network environments.
  • Install and test upgrades to applications, programs and databases including service packs, patches, hot fixes and releases in a UAT test environment.
  • Contribute to the postmortem analysis following any database or application problem or failure where they were involved. This may lead to recommendations or adjustments to procedures to prevent future incidents.
  • ProvideTier 2-3 support to Tier 1-2 technicians, Regional Technicians and a variety of end user departments specifically in support of these GN production applications and programs. This support could also include mentoring end users or Tier 1 technicians.
  • Support remote communities, which may include phone support or using remote administration tools provided by the GN. Travel to communities to provide onsite support will be required from time to time.
  • Deal with third party vendors and developers of applications, programs and databases used by the GN.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through:

  • Diploma in Informatics Technology or related field
  • Five (5) years’ experience in a technical support capacity in a medium to large Windows Server network operations environment.
  • Three (3) of these years must be specific to administering and supporting a variety of Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle databases
  • Industry standard certifications from Microsoft, Oracle or equivalent corporations will be considered an asset; specifically, certification for databases will carry more preference.
  • The Government of Nunavut practices the ITIL framework methodology, and ITIL certification will be considered an asset for this position

This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
