MacEwan University is seeking a Team Lead, Building Operations for the Facilities Maintenance department on the Edmonton campus. The role leads daily HVAC and plant operations, oversees maintenance teams, and ensures costs stay within approved budgets.

The ideal candidate has a 4th Class Power Engineering or Building Operator certificate, 5+ years building ops experience, and 3+ years of leadership. On‑campus role with union environment experience is a plus.

Qualifications

• Minimum 4th Class Power Engineering or Building Operator A Certificate.
• Minimum 5 years of progressive building operations experience in commercial or institutional settings.
• Minimum 3 years of operational leadership experience.
• Experience in a unionized environment is an asset.
• Completion of a recognized technical/post‑secondary program in Power Engineering, Mechanical Systems, Building Operations, or Facilities Management is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Overseeing daily inspections of boilers, chillers and generators and related equipment.

Salary: MSU Band F (Steps 1-8): $36.722 - $53.420 per hour. $66,833 - $97,225 per annum (Based on 35 hours per week).

MacEwan University is seeking a Team Lead, Building Operations for a full-time continuing opportunity with the Facilities Maintenance department.

Key responsibilities include:

• Overseeing and participating in daily inspections of boilers, chillers and generators, including associated pumps, thermal exchange equipment and controls;
• Troubleshooting and assigning corrective action to prevent equipment or system failure;
• Assigning minor HVAC repairs and filter replacements and minor facility including architectural, plumbing, door hardware, calibrations, typically up to $10,000 in total cost;
• Recommending major expenditures such as equipment replacement and system overhaul work;
• Ensuring project and contracts remain within approved spending limits;
• Monitoring operational and maintenance-related expenditures, identifying and explaining variances in expected costs, and ensuring that spending decisions align with operational requirements and cost-efficiency objectives;
• Providing leadership and direction to Facilities Power Engineers and Facilities Maintenance Workers to ensure the needs of the MacEwan University Campus are met;
• Coaching, developing and supervising the team to jointly achieve the goals of the team and contribute to the operation of the University;
• In cooperation with the Senior Manager, ensuring that Facilities staff are compliant with all appropriate policies and procedures in order to ensure efficient, safe and effective facilities maintenance through a process of continuous improvement;
• Overseeing the recording of a daily log of operation, maintenance and safety activities;
• Writing reports on plant operation, efficiency and compliance; and
• Documenting all deficiencies noted to ensure plant equipment operates at maximum efficiency.

Skills

• Strong working knowledge of HVAC systems and controls, mechanical and electrical building systems, preventive and corrective maintenance practices;
• The ability to assess risk, determine escalation thresholds, and distinguish between minor versus major repairs;
• Technical skills to research and diagnose issues with building heating and cooling systems, and to initiate repairs of these systems;
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly in emergency or high-impact operational situations;
• Sound judgement and the ability to weigh costs and benefits;
• Strong leadership skills to assign and manage the workload of a team, resolve issues, and coach and develop staff;
• The ability to build effective working relationships across operational areas and coordinate work between the Mechanical, Electrical, and Maintenance teams;
• Strong communication skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders; and
• Proficiency in documenting operational issues, preparing technical reports, and maintaining accurate records.

Qualifications

• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Position Requirements

• This position is on campus only.
• A valid class 5 driver’s license.
• The ability to participate in support and coverage for the maintenance on-call schedule as well as work some weekends and evenings to support the operations.
