MacEwan University is seeking a 4th Class Power Engineer for a full-time continuing role within the Facilities department, based on campus in Edmonton. The incumbent will operate and maintain boilers, chillers, generators, and related equipment to ensure heat, refrigeration, and services for university infrastructure.

The role includes back-up support for the Building Management System and routine inspections.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4th Class Power Engineer certification and HS diploma.
  • At least 3 years of Power Engineer experience in commercial or institutional settings.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Daily inspecting of boilers, chillers and generators, including pumps and controls.
  • Record gauges for temperature and pressure and document deficiencies.
  • Troubleshoot and perform minor repairs to prevent failures.
  • Perform minor HVAC repairs and replace filters.
  • Conduct minor facility repairs (architectural, plumbing, doors, calibrations).
  • Clean and lubricate generators, pumps, and compressors; perform routine maintenance.
  • Maintain mechanical areas in acceptable condition.
  • Keep daily log of operations, maintenance and safety activities; write reports.
  • Monitor hydronic heating/cooling chemical treatment; oversee corrective actions.
  • Prepare for and perform annual inspections of hot water equipment and boilers.

MacEwan University is seeking a 4 th Class Power Engineer for a full-time continuing opportunity with the Facilities department.

The 4th Class Power Engineer will be responsible for operating and maintaining boilers, chillers, generators, and auxiliary equipment to provide heat, refrigeration, and other services for the university infrastructure. This position will also provide back-up services to the operation of the BMS (Building Management System), monitor and inspect heating plant equipment, switches, gauges, valves, alarms, meters, and perform some of the more technical tasks on HVAC servicing.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Daily inspecting of boilers, chillers and generators, including associated pumps, thermal exchange equipment and controls;
  • Reviewing and recording gauges that measure temperature as well as pressure readings, while documenting all deficiencies noted to ensure plant equipment is operating at maximum efficiency;
  • Troubleshooting and performing corrective action and minor repairs to prevent equipment or system failures;
  • Performing minor HVAC repairs and replacing filters;
  • Performing minor facility repairs such as architectural, plumbing, door hardware, calibrations, etc) repairs;
  • Cleaning and lubricating generators, pumps and compressors, and perform other routine equipment maintenance duties using appropriate lubricants, hand, power, and precision tools;
  • Maintaining mechanical areas in an acceptable condition;
  • Maintaining a daily log of operation, maintenance and safety activities, and writing reports on plant operation and non-compliance;
  • Monitoring hydronic heating and cooling system chemical treatment and recommending and overseeing corrective measures; and
  • Preparing for and performing annual internal inspections of hot water equipment, boilers, tanks, pressure vessels and miscellaneous equipment, replacing pressure relief valves.
Skills

You will have:

  • The ability to independently research, diagnose issues and initiate repairs with building heating and cooling systems;
  • Working knowledge on understanding, applying, and utilizing mechanical principles and concepts in a commercial building setting; and
  • Strong technical skills and knowledge using applicable tools, machinery, and mechanical systems.
Qualifications
  • A minimum of a High School diploma, with a current 4th Class Power Engineer certification.
  • A minimum of 3 years of Power Engineer experience with commercial building operations or institutional settings.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Availability to work a shift from 1:00pm to 9:00pm
