Job description

Facilities Services is a team of professionals who are committed to the delivery of support services that strive to enhance the quality of campus life for all students, faculty, staff, and visitors. We are responsible for providing a safe, clean, productive, and well-maintained physical learning and working environment through the effective planning and delivery of professional services in design, construction, maintenance, utilities, caretaking, and grounds. With a commitment to sustainability, equity, diversity and inclusion, Facilities Services works with campus partners to provide exceptional customer service and satisfaction in alignment with the University's core values. Reporting to the Director, Energy Management, the Manager, Maintenance Operations provides leadership for the delivery of repair, corrective maintenance, and related building services across the University's campuses, supporting over 100 academic, research, administrative, residential, and leased facilities, as well as associated infrastructure. The role oversees maintenance activities involving building interiors and exteriors, equipment, and mechanical and structural systems, and supports the implementation of preventive maintenance programs to promote safe, reliable, and well-maintained environments for the University community. The role works closely with Facilities Services colleagues and clients to understand service requirements, prioritize resources, and support the effective delivery of maintenance services that are safe, reliable, and cost-effective. The position also oversees maintenance-related compliance activities and supports continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen service delivery, improve asset reliability, enhance productivity, and contribute to the achievement of established service standards. As a subject matter expert, the Manager provides leadership and guidance to internal and external stakeholders to support effective operations and team performance. The role fosters collaborative working relationships across the University and with external service providers to deliver high-quality service through a lens of equity, diversity, and inclusion. The position is also responsible for maintaining positive labour relations, applying collective agreements, policies, and procedures appropriately, and contributing to the development and implementation of effective budgetary controls.

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field, such as Engineering, Building Sciences.
  • Valid Trade Licence, Electrical, Plumbing, or Millwright (Province of Ontario) or Professional Engineer (P. Eng) designation in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) required. Note: Position requires verification of degree(s)/credential(s)
Experience:
  • 6 years recent and progressive facilities/maintenance experience, including leading maintenance planning/scheduling, preventive maintenance, and unionized trades teams in a complex, multiâ??building environment.
  • 4 years of management experience in a unionized environment.
  • Experience in building construction/ sciences and maintenance activities are required.
  • Experience working in a complex post-secondary or public sector environment.
Skills:
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of building construction principles, building sciences, and building maintenance activities, including their application to the operation, maintenance, and renewal of building systems and infrastructure .
  • Knowledge of applicable legislative, regulatory, and code requirements, including the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations, the National Fire Code, and the Ontario Building Code, and their application to workplace and building safety compliance.
  • Knowledge of building automation systems, life safety systems, and other integrated building systems and their operation, monitoring, and control within building environments.
  • Knowledge of procurement processes.
  • Understanding of the political landscape. Skills

  • Effective project and operational planning skills, including the ability to coordinate resources, manage priorities, and support the delivery of maintenance, repair, and improvement initiatives.
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to identify process improvements, assess operational issues, and implement practical, service-oriented solutions.
  • Effective crisis management and decision-making skills, with the ability to respond effectively to emergencies, service disruptions, and other sensitive or high-pressure operational situations.
  • Commitment to fostering a culture of safety, accountability, equity, diversity, inclusion, and continuous improvement in maintenance operations.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, Visio), project management software (MS Project), computerized maintenance management software (MAXIMO), and commercial drafting software application (AutoCAD).
Additional Notes:
  • Work is performed in a combination of office, campus, and construction site environments requiring regular travel between University locations.
