We are looking for a Systems Design Specialist - Intermediate to join our Toronto team. The successful candidate will perform system design, signaling design, analysis, modeling, and simulation to specify communication-based train control systems. Responsibilities include developing system features, analyzing designs for compliance, developing subsystem requirements, and preparing technical documentation and reports.

You will be accountable for executing design work correctly, within budget and schedule, under the guidance of work packages, reviewed by the Systems Architect or Manager. The role involves collaboration with engineering teams to define designs, performance criteria, and validation methods.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Translate customer requirements into conceptual designs and documentation through analyses, simulations, and trade-off studies.
  2. Create or modify concepts to meet customer needs.
  3. Develop system, subsystem, and interface requirements by analyzing and decomposing customer and domain requirements.
  4. Prepare operational concept documents and detailed design specifications.
  5. Perform technical tasks related to system and subsystem design, including database development and analysis.
  6. Design signaling systems, including block design, interlocking control, and safety models.
  7. Design communication networks, ensuring reliability, security, and scalability.
  8. Evaluate third-party communication systems and their integration with CBTC systems.
  9. Support bid and proposal efforts with technical assessments and simulations.
  10. Present technical designs and reports clearly to stakeholders.
  11. Update processes and standards based on engineering knowledge.
  12. Ensure designs comply with standards and safety requirements.
  13. Collaborate with software, hardware, and testing teams to resolve issues.
  14. Lead technical discussions and stakeholder presentations.
  15. Provide regular project updates and identify process improvements.
  16. Promote safety in design and early safety defect resolution.
Required Skills and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • 2-5 years’ experience in developing software-based system applications.
  • Knowledge of modern software engineering practices and SDLC.
  • Medium expertise in URS systems, with at least 3 years in similar complexity systems, especially in CBTC domain.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
  • Strong domain knowledge in automated train control systems and systems engineering principles.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to sell and defend products to diverse audiences.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Experience with tools like DOORS and Melody Advance.
  • Rail signaling knowledge.
