We are looking for a Systems Design Specialist - Intermediate to join our team in Toronto.

The successful candidate will perform system design, signaling design, analysis, modelling, and simulation to specify communication-based train control systems. They will develop and define system design features to meet Customer requirements. They will analyze and evaluate designs to verify compliance with system technical requirements. They will develop and define Subsystems requirements. They will develop block design, interlocking control tables, and application database for Software subsystems. They will analyze and evaluate system performance and prepare associated technical contract deliverables.

You will be accountable for performing the design work correctly, within cost and schedule limits, as defined in approved work packages. The work is typically defined by the Work Package Manager, then reviewed and approved by the Systems Architect and/or Manager. The System Engineer typically works with a team of engineers to define what will be designed, how it will perform, and how it will be determined that it is working correctly.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Converts Customer (internal and/or external) requirements into conceptual designs and prepares associated documentation by performing operational analyses, simulations, and technical trade-off studies evaluating alternative design configurations and functional features.
  2. Creates new concepts or modifies existing concepts to fulfill customer requirements.
  3. Prepares system, subsystem, and interface requirement specifications by analyzing, decomposing, modeling, and refining customer requirements and typical train control domain requirements.
  4. Prepares Operational Concept Document.
  5. Performs technical/engineering tasks to define system design, subsystem requirements, and application databases for software subsystems.
  6. Prepares specialized signaling design skills, covering one or more of the following: Signaling Principles; Block design; Interlocking control tables; Safe braking model; Performance analysis and Headway simulations and Application database design.
  7. Prepares specialized network design skills, covering one or more of the following: Communication network requirements; Communication network design (both wired and wireless); Communication network configuration (both wired and wireless); Communication network analysis on various perspectives, such as reliability, security, scalability, maintainability, etc., and troubleshooting various complex network issues.
  8. Evaluation of existing third-party communication network design and their interaction with CBTC communication network.
  9. Prepares and supports bids and proposals, including customer requirements compliance assessment, gap analysis, architecture design, simulation, trade-off of key features, estimation, etc.
  10. Presents technical design and reports to customers and/or other engineering/management groups in clear, complete, concise, and non-ambiguous terms.
  11. Defines or proposes updates of processes and standards covering the work and its products based on the knowledge of systems engineering and/or their technical specialty.
  12. Operational design limits are evaluated and defined; performance analyses and simulations are developed & performed to support the above.
  13. Ensures the signaling design is implemented in accordance with applicable standards and signaling principles.
  14. Interfaces and builds strong working relationships with Software, Hardware, and IVVQ groups to ensure timely analysis and resolution of in-house and field test issues.
  15. Leads technical discussions and technical solution presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
  16. Prepares and delivers regular status reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  17. Identifies and implements process improvement initiatives.
  18. Promotes a safety culture where product safety is paramount.
  19. Ensures that safety is built into the design by early identification and resolution of safety-related defects.

Required Skills and Experience:
  1. Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Physics, System Design Engineering, or other related discipline.
  2. 2-5 years' experience in development of software-based System applications.
  3. Knowledge of modern software engineering practices, methods, and tools.
  4. Knowledge of systems development life cycle.
  5. Medium level expertise in URS (Urban Rail Signaling) Systems: Minimum 3 years on/or similar system complexity-intermediate level of expertise on specialized engineering skills of the CBTC (Communication Based Train Control) domain.

Preferred Skills and Experience:
  1. Strong application (automated train control systems) domain knowledge and knowledge of systems engineering principles and practices.
  2. Excellent technical writing and communication skills.
  3. Good presentation skills.
  4. Ability to sell/defend products to customers with differing levels of knowledge about automated systems.
  5. Strong planning and organizational skills.
  6. Experience in using DOORS, Melody advance, etc.
  7. Rail Signaling knowledge.
