Job description

If so, then this opportunity might be for you! The City of Edmonton's Infrastructure Delivery Branch is currently seeking a motivated and skilled Survey Technical Assistant II to join their Survey Services team on a temporary full-time basis.

As a Survey Technical Assistant II, you will play a key role in supporting the Survey Technologist I (Survey Crew Lead) in conducting various field surveys. You will be responsible for operating technical survey equipment, performing technical computations, and ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of survey operations. This position requires a strong understanding of survey principles, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team while maintaining a strong commitment to safety.

What will you do?

  • Assist the Survey Technologist I in all aspects of field survey operations, including locating survey marks, marking locations, taking measurements, and setting up and operating survey equipment
  • Perform technical computations and data reductions to ensure the accuracy of survey data
  • Maintain supplies for the crew and ensure that equipment is in good working order
  • Provide on-the-job training for other crew members on the use of survey equipment and supplies
  • Participate in consultations with Survey Technicians, Engineers, designers, supervisors, and client representatives
  • Adhere to all applicable safety standards and guidelines, and participate in safety meetings and training
  • Complete Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHA) and report any safety issues or concerns
Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 and post-secondary training in basic and advanced survey calculations and Basic Total Station
  • Three years of relevant, all-season survey experience
  • Thorough understanding of survey principles and techniques
  • Ability to operate various survey equipment, including levels, Total Station, GPS receivers, and laser alignment systems
  • Ability to perform technical calculations and data reductions

Assets:

  • Experience in a variety of survey types, including engineering and control surveys
  • Experience in a lead-hand role
  • Familiarity with the City of Edmonton's survey standards and methods

Skills required for success:

  • Possessing a strong understanding of survey principles, techniques, and equipment operation
  • Identifying and resolving technical problems in the field
  • Effectively communicating with crew members, project managers, contractors, inspectors, and other stakeholders
  • Working collaboratively with crew members and contributing to a positive team environment
  • Providing guidance and training to other crew members, and potentially acting in a lead-hand role
  • Adhering to safety standards and guidelines, and proactively identifying and addressing safety concerns
  • Experience working with survey software and data processing tools
  • Knowledge of construction practices and terminology
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications
  • Familiarity with GPS and other positioning technologies
  • Experience in conducting topographic surveys, boundary surveys, and construction surveys
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation

Conditions of Employment:

  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toed boots, is a requirement for this position
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position

Work Environment:

  • This position involves working outdoors in all weather conditions
  • You may be required to work in confined spaces, at heights, and around noise and vibrations

Up to 11 temporary full-time positions for up to 11 months are available

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week available

The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.

Salary Range:$29.534 - $37.001 (Hourly)
