Job summary

Simon Fraser University is seeking a Traffic and Road Safety Supervisor to oversee campus traffic safety programs, liaise with Campus Public Safety and stakeholders, and monitor movement on the Burnaby campus. • Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Emergency Management, or related field with four years in operational public safety or security, including traffic/road safety supervision.
• Ability to assess operational and safety risks, exercise sound judgment, and make timely field decisions.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work with diverse internal and external stakeholders.
• Ability to coordinate multiple priorities, respond to emerging issues, and perform in a fast-paced environment.
• Practical hands-on ability to support safe operation and upkeep of vehicles and safety equipment.

• Balance day-to-day responsibilities with unexpected issues; communicate effectively with a wide range of people.
• Serve as primary first aid responder for motor vehicle collisions and roadway-related incidents on the Burnaby campus.

Campus Public Safety (CPS) is a service unit within SFU’s Safety & Risk Services department, supporting safe and secure campus environments across SFU. The team provides security, incident response, traffic safety, and community safety services to students, faculty, staff, and visitors. CPS works closely with partners across the University to support day-to-day campus operations and respond to emerging safety needs. The team is collaborative, practical, and service-focused, with a strong emphasis on professionalism, sound judgment, and continuous improvement.

About the Role

The Traffic and Road Safety Supervisor oversees the delivery of traffic safety programs and liaises with Campus Public Safety Supervisors, SRS leadership, and a range of internal and external stakeholders regarding special events, traffic and pedestrian movement, cycling and other forms of personal transportation, UAV/drone operations, construction and road maintenance impacts, emergent roadway disruptions, regulatory compliance, and related traffic and safety issues. The role supports the common goal of enhancing public safety while maintaining University operations. The Traffic and Road Safety Supervisor monitors and assesses traffic and pedestrian movement on campus and provides safety education to students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The role may act as Incident Commander during severe weather events and emergencies involving roadways or access routes, working alongside other Campus Public Safety team members. The role also serves as a primary first aid responder for motor vehicle collisions and other roadway-related incidents on the Burnaby campus.

The ideal candidate is someone who is practical, safety-minded, and comfortable working in a busy operational environment. They should have strong judgment, be able to assess situations quickly, and be confident making decisions in the field. The role requires someone who communicates well, works effectively with a wide range of people, and can balance day-to-day responsibilities with unexpected issues as they arise. A willingness to take initiative is important, particularly in identifying operational or safety concerns across the campus environment. The role also requires a practical, hands-on approach to help ensure CPS vehicles and equipment remain in good working order.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Emergency Management, or another relevant field and four years of related experience in an operational public safety, community safety, medical first responder or security role, including experience working in a traffic and road safety environment in a supervisory leadership capacity or equivalent combination of knowledge, training and experience.

• Strong knowledge of traffic and road safety principles, practices, and applicable regulations to review Traffic Management Plans (TMP) and Traffic Impact Assessments (TIA) as a traffic authority representing SFU.
• Ability to assess operational and safety risks, exercise sound judgment, and make timely decisions in the field.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
• Ability to coordinate multiple priorities, respond to emerging issues, and work effectively in a fast-paced operational environment.
• Practical, hands-on ability to support the safe operation and upkeep of vehicles, traffic safety equipment, and related operational resources.
