- Support the Estimating Lead in preparing detailed cost estimates for structural scopes on design-build and complex transportation projects. This scope includes bridge superstructures and substructures, deep foundations, formwork, falsework, reinforcement, structural steel, post-tensioning, demolition, and associated temporary works.
- Assist in preparing the Basis of Estimate (BOE) documentation including methodology, key assumptions, exclusions, benchmarking, and classification of estimates.
- Apply first principles estimating techniques to develop accurate Class 1 estimates in accordance with AACE Recommended Practices.
- Interpret and apply OPSS and OPSD standards for MTO structural projects, including understanding relevant quality control and assurance provisions.
- Assess incomplete and evolving designs to identify cost assumptions, quantify risk exposure, and support contingency development.
- Coordinate with the Estimating Lead and technical team to develop estimate structures, assess construction risks, and evaluate alternate means, methods, and sequencing of bridge construction.
- Build and maintain detailed cost breakdown structures for bridge and structural components.
- Support subcontractor and supplier procurement by issuing RFQs, evaluating bid submissions, and managing relevant documentation.
- Integrate current market trends, escalation, and risk pricing factors into structural estimates.
- Participate in risk register development and calculate contingency values based on project-specific risk analyses.
- Utilize industry-standard estimating software such as InEight or HeavyBid.
- Collaborate with quantity take-off teams to validate and reconcile structural quantities, while identifying assumptions and areas of quantity risk.
- Work closely with project controls, design, and construction teams throughout the design and estimating lifecycle.
Position Requirements :
- Degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or related discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in civil infrastructure, including 3+ years in a dedicated structural estimating capacity.
- Demonstrated experience working on and/or estimating MTO bridge projects, with strong working knowledge of OPSS and OPSD standards.
- Proven proficiency in first principles estimating for structural components and Class 1 cost estimates.
- Experience estimating within design-build delivery models is an asset.
- Strong ability to interpret evolving design documents and develop corresponding cost, risk, and contingency assessments.
- Familiarity with AACE Recommended Practices and industry cost estimating standards.
- Proficiency in industry estimating software such as InEight, HeavyBid, or similar tools.
- Sound understanding of structural procurement processes, including RFQ issuance, bid evaluation, and subcontractor/supplier engagement.
- Experience identifying and evaluating construction risks associated with large-span bridges and calculating contingency values.
- In-depth knowledge of Ontario’s infrastructure market conditions and their influence on structural costing.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and analytical abilities, with a collaborative mindset.
- Able to work under pressure, manage competing priorities, and deliver high-quality work on tight deadlines.
