Job summary

Irving Shipbuilding seeks a Steel Planner to manage Structural Steel Bills of Materials using 3D models and develop executable work packages for vessel construction. The role ensures proper sequencing of steel components, materials, and work scopes in line with build strategies and project schedules.

The ideal candidate will integrate Inspection Test Points into the planned sequence, embed quality requirements, and support production through all phases.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary technical/engineering degree or equivalent.
  • Trade Certificate/Red Seal is an asset.
  • 2–5 years planning/trade experience recommended, naval context preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret trade drawings.
  • Familiarity with Primavera P6, Aveva, AutoCAD an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret contract drawings to define scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Create high-quality work packs for efficient execution.
  • Ensure accurate activity breakdowns, sequencing, and budgeting in Primavera P6.
  • Identify material stock discrepancies, coordinating with cross-functional teams.
  • Provide trade-specific support to Planning and Production teams; track scheduling progress.

Job Description

The Steel Planner is responsible for the consumption and management of Structural Steel Bills of Material (BOMs) using 3D product models to develop clean, executable work packages for Production throughout all stages of vessel construction. This role ensures that steel components, materials, and work scopes are sequenced and planned in alignment with build strategies, production requirements, and project schedules.


The Steel Planner integrates Inspection Test Points (ITPs) into the planned work sequence, ensuring quality requirements are embedded within the production process and enabling efficient execution, inspection, and completion of work. Success in this role requires strong knowledge of structural steel fabrication, 3D modeling systems, production planning, material control, and quality assurance processes.


Responsibilities


  • Interpret contract documentation and technical drawings to define scope, budget, and schedule.

  • Create high-quality job packs that enable efficient execution of work.

  • Ensure accurate activity breakdowns, logical sequencing, and resource budgeting in Primavera P6.

  • Identify and report material stock discrepancies, collaborating with Scheduling, Planning, Project Management, and Supply Chain teams.

  • Providing trade-specific support to Planning and Production teams.

  • Maintain tracking tools to support production scheduling and progress monitoring.


Qualifications


  • Post-secondary degree, ideally in a technical, engineering, or related discipline.

  • Trade Certificate or Red Seal designation (asset).

  • 2–5 years of planning or trade experience, preferably in naval shipbuilding or repair environment.

  • Ability to interpret trade related drawings.

  • Familiarity with Primavera P6, MS Excel, Aveva, or AutoCAD considered an asset.

  • Knowledge of naval repair methods considered an asset.

  • Lean/Six Sigma certifications (White, Yellow, or Green Belt) are considered assets.


Due to the nature of work Irving Shipbuilding does, all successful applicants must meet requirements for the Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).


Please note this position requires a full-time, in-office presence.
