Job summary

Overstory is seeking a Staff Data Engineer to lead the design and scaling of our data platform that powers AI-driven vegetation analysis. You will own the architecture, ensure reliable pipelines for satellite imagery, model inferences, and utility data, and set standards for data quality and observability.

You will mentor engineers, drive architectural decisions, and collaborate across data, ML, and product teams to balance delivery with durability and traceability.

Qualifications

• Experience at the intersection of data engineering, distributed systems, and large-scale scientific data.
• 10+ years of production-grade data pipelines and systems design.
• Hands-on Dagster expertise for orchestration, sensors, and production ops.
• Proven track record building and operating data pipelines at scale with idempotency and backfills.
• Experience with Google Cloud and event-driven architectures.

Responsibilities

• Architect and evolve the orchestration layer, ensuring reliable scaling.
• Design production data pipelines for geospatial and temporal data from ingestion to delivery.
• Lead system design across the data platform, defining boundaries and contracts.
• Drive service-oriented architecture and decoupled components teams can deploy.
• Build event-driven workflows with durable messaging patterns.
• Establish observability, testing, and data quality frameworks.
• Mentor engineers and set standards for data systems.
