We are currently hiring Sr. Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager to join the team at our Underground Salt Mine in Goderich, Ontario.

Compass Minerals' Goderich Salt Mine, located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron, is the largest underground salt mine in the world. The mine is as deep as the CN Tower in Toronto is tall. The rock salt produced at the mine is used to keep citizens in North America safe as they travel through winter snow and ice. The salt is shipped to hundreds of communities around the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Some of the salt is trucked to the Compass Minerals plant less than 4 kilometers away, to be packaged for distribution and sale at retailers in North America. The salt is also sold in bulk to manufacturers that make plastics, detergents, disinfectants and other important products. Goderich is named Canada's Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8,000 people located approximately 1.5 hours from London and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.

How will you contribute to the team?

This position serves as the lead of the Environmental, Health and Safety team for the Goderich Mine. This position is responsible for promoting a safe, healthy, and productive work environment by enhancing safety awareness, monitoring and auditing safety systems, reporting safety statistics, and delivering effective safety training. This role collaborates with site personnel, contractors, regulatory agencies, and corporate staff to support the full spectrum of EHS initiatives.

  • Directly responsible for planning, directing, and monitoring the quality, direction, and effectiveness of safety, environmental and security programs for the mine to achieve site and corporate objectives.
  • Lead, coach and develop the site-based EHS team
  • Manage the approved EHS budget and develop site-specific health and safety policies to compliance with federal and provincial regulations.
  • Provide expert guidance and recommendation to site leadership on best practices in EHS and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain EHS policies and procedures tailored to the mine's operational needs.
  • Stay current on industry safety regulations and standards; ensure internal practices reflect evolving compliance requirements.
  • Design and deliver EHS training programs for employees and contractors, including onboarding, ongoing development, and compliance training. Identify H&S training and coaching needs for the facility. Participate in evaluation and monitoring of success of training programs. Follow-up to ensure training objectives are met.
  • Support and implement company-wide safety initiatives; identify opportunities for improving EHS efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Lead site industrial hygiene surveys and programs.
  • Serve as an active member of the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant mining and EHS regulations.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Risk Management, Change Management, and Contractor Management

  • Develop and maintain a robust site-wide risk management program that integrates risk awareness and mitigation across all operational levels.
  • Design, implement, and oversee the site's critical control monitoring program.
  • Ensure timely completion of risk assessments, analyze findings, and implement effective, sustainable corrective actions.
  • Establish processes to monitor contractor EHS performance and ensure alignment with site standards.
  • Champion the change management process; act as a key resource to facilitate timely and effective implementation of changes.

Incident Investigation & Analysis and Audits

  • Develop and oversee a comprehensive incident investigation process using ICAM or other recognized methodologies.
  • Facilitate investigations of workplace incidents and near misses, providing process guidance, coaching, and quality assurance.
  • Ensure regular site inspections are completed to proactively identify and address safety hazards.

Systems Management and Reporting

  • Maintain the site's Safety and Health Management System (SHMS) to ensure alignment with applicable legislation and corporate requirements.
  • Ensure timely, accurate, and complete submission of required reports to regulatory agencies and corporate office.
  • Track and analyze injury and illness data to identify trends and recommend proactive strategies for exposure elimination, risk reduction, and injury prevention.
  • Collaborate with the Human Resources team to support medical case management and return-to-work processes for injured employees. Assist with the development of suitable duties programs and complex return-to-work scenarios.
  • Participate in local leadership team meetings, contributing subject-matter expertise on EHS strategy and performance.

What should you bring to the role?

Education and / or Experience :

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental / Industrial Hygiene, Sciences or related discipline
  • Minimum of 10 years related experience is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.
  • Previous experience leading and developing high-performing EHS teams.
  • Proven success in implementing behaviour-based or cognitive safety systems.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety with previous experience in identifying risks and implementing safe working practices
  • Experience with workers' compensation case management and return-to-work programs.
  • Underground mining experience is highly preferred.

Skills and Competencies

  • Experience in a Safety & Health role within industrial, mining, or manufacturing operations viewed favorably
  • Underground mining environment experience is highly preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to effectively engage with stakeholders at all organizational levels.
  • Advanced project management skills; able to manage multiple complex initiatives simultaneously.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to drive cultural change and build safety ownership throughout the organization.
  • Ability to lead, influencing stakeholders to adopt EHS best practices.
  • In-depth understanding of relevant regulatory requirements, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations for Mines.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and capable of generating analytical reports.
