About The Role

Gartner Analysts are industry thought leaders who create must-have research, market predictions and best practices for a broad range of world-leading organizations. A Senior Director is a leader in Gartner’s Research and Advisory sector, establishing oneself as a credible voice within their designated regional and global markets. The Senior Director plays a significant role in producing pragmatic and provocative research which Gartner clients consume to propel their business toward key objectives. They are a trusted source of advice for clients, reinforcing Gartner’s value every day by engaging clients via virtual meetings, sales support visits and Gartner conferences to discuss complex client challenges and offer appropriate recommendations.

This Analyst is primarily responsible for advising Gartner High Tech clients in Technology Product Leadership Roles, applying your experience working for large or global technology providers managing data security software products.

You will identify key opportunities for our high-tech security clients to differentiate their data security offers, compete against established and emerging players and grow security software revenue. You will articulate strategies to exploit emerging market and competitive dynamics that can drive market share growth. You will leverage available primary and secondary data sources and collaborate with peer analysts to deliver high impact, world-class research insights and advice. Finally, you will also advise high-tech clients at-large regarding how to effectively secure data as part of their offers. Your advice will be consistently delivered through published research, 1:1 client inquiry, virtual and in-person presentations and local briefings.

This Senior Director will demonstrate strong product management experience with software products within the range of data security topics:

  • Data security governance (policy, risk, access, classification)
  • Enterprise data security (access, encryption, mobile apps, DLP, secure email gateway)
  • Cloud-native data security (access, activity monitoring, encryption, key management, cloud-native DLP, data masking)
  • Secure data sharing (file encryption, digital rights, key management)
  • Transmission security (TLS, DoH, DoT)
  • Security service edge (CASB, ZTNA, SWG)
  • Data security platforms (structured discovery and classification, access, activity monitoring, data masking, tokenization, encryption)
  • Data security posture management (policy and posture alignment, data map and pipeline analysis, risk identification)
  • Privacy-enhancing computation (trusted execution environment, searchable encryption, secure multiparty computation, differential privacy, homomorphic encryption)

Please note this is an individual contributor role and NOT a leadership role with direct reports.

What You Will Do

The following items are specific to data security markets:

  • Create innovative, thought provoking, and highly leveraged “must-have research” for global technology provider data security clients
  • Develop research that offers compelling, actionable approaches to client's needs and accelerate the client's ability to drive security software revenue growth
  • Build in-depth analysis to identify the root cause of client performance barriers and reframe client thinking to drive their business strategy forward
  • Establish research positions that are adopted across a cohort of analysts
  • Provide high quality and timely research content peer review
  • Become a trusted advisor to client product managers of data security software products by providing a regular cadence of high-quality interactions via 1:1 client inquiry.
  • Build credibility as a data security industry expert to represent Gartner research, methodology and strategy during meetings with security client Executive Teams.
  • Validate client strategies and accelerate client decision making by providing available data and use cases that de-risk their business decisions.
  • Create and deliver high value presentation materials for virtual and in-person Gartner events, industry and professional association conferences, and client briefings
  • Provide sales support for large and global technology service clients and prospects so Gartner is able to retain and grow seatholders and revenue.

What You Will Need

This means you need to know the data security market, emerging trends, top providers and effective high-tech product management practices. Gartner Analysts are team players who value expert insights, bold ideas and intellectual courage.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Data Security field; Graduate degree preferred
  • 12+ years of tech provider-side experience in the data security market with deep subject matter expertise across all data security domains.
  • Strong knowledge of data security market share leaders as well as other key global tech providers in this space and what strategies they employ to compete.
  • Full product lifecycle management experience gained while working at large or global high-tech provider: building product strategy, launching new products, managing product evolution, product pricing and packaging, messaging and market collaboration, product delivery management, managing in- and end-of-life product activities
  • Strong written and verbal proficiency, analytical and presentation skills; ability to engage clients and respond effectively to questions during 1:1 client inquiry
  • Ability to produce high-quality written deliverables within scheduled deadlines
  • Comfortable presenting at large and small-scale speaking engagements
  • Strong business and financial acumen
  • Ability to synthesize data quickly and accurately from multiple sources
  • Strong data visualization skills, preferably utilizing tools like PowerBI and Excel, or similar tools
  • Experience with (or able to quickly learn) with tools and data sources such as Pitchbook, CapIQ, TechCrunch, Bloomberg, and other forecast/financial data
  • Demonstrated superior analytical skills while applying conceptual models, recognizing patterns while drawing and defending conclusions
  • Ability to work independently, while also being motivated to collaborate across teams and support the workflow of others, in a global team
  • Strong organizational skills; ability to work under tight deadlines and produce high quality deliverables
  • Adept at analyzing and synthesizing data; can effectively apply patterns and frameworks to client challenges
  • Demonstrate executive presence; can immediately establish credibility with executives and additional stakeholders
  • Demonstrated willingness and foundation ability to mentor and coach others
  • Flexible thinker adept at change and experienced navigating matrixed environments
  • Ability to conduct occasional travel, regionally and globally
