Job summary

The Ottawa Hospital is seeking a Specialist in Quality Clinical Surgery to lead high-quality chart reviews and enter data into the ACS NSQIP database. You will collaborate with surgeons and the Department of Surgery to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and implement designated projects.

The role requires a nursing or PA background with several years of surgical inpatient experience, proficiency in data analysis, and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

• Three (3) year Undergraduate Degree in Nursing or Physician Assistant, or equivalent.
• Licensed as a Registered nurse, Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant.
• Four (4) years experience as Licensed RN or PA.
• Three (3) years experience in a surgical inpatient setting.
• Three (3) years interpretation of patient charts, procedures and outcomes.
• Demonstrated experience with statistical analysis.
• Ability to work independently.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Proficiency in data collection and analysis.
• Knowledge of hospital systems.
• Understanding of quality improvement principles and methodology.
• Eligible to work in Canada.

Position Information

The Specialist, Quality Clinical Surgery chief responsibility is to collect and submit reliable data to the American College of Surgeons - National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP). This is accomplished through high-quality surgical chart review and interpretation, data compilation, documentation, and entry into the ACS NSQIP database of all eligible surgeries for the hospital. The SCR works closely with the physicians and members of the Department of Surgery to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and other special projects that may be identified.

Rotation/Shifts

• Days, 8 hour shifts.

What You Will Do

• Surgical patient charts that meet inclusions criteria are reviewed and enter data into NSQIP database;
• Apply ACS methodology to enter data into the ACS database;
• Complete data analysis and make recommendations to the Surgeon Champion, Quality Improvement Leads or other teams in a simple timely manner;
• Engaging in collaborative learning, evaluation and sharing quality improvement lessons and solutions with networks of colleagues at provincial and national levels;
• Clinical data collection, analysis and reporting;
• Identification and presentation of improvement opportunities;
• Formal communications with surgeons, staff, patients and families, NSQIP;
• Contributes to surgical documentation best practices.

Basic Requirements

• Three (3) year Undergraduate Degree in Nursing or Physician Assistant, or equivalent;
• Licensed as a Registered nurse, Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant;
• Four (4) years experience working as a Licensed Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant;
• Three (3) years experience in a surgical inpatient setting;
• Three (3) years interpretation of patient's chart, surgical procedures, and outcomes;
• Demonstrated experience with statistical analysis;
• Ability to work independently;
• Excellent communication skills;
• Proficiency in data collection and analysis;
• Knowledge of hospital systems;
• Understanding of quality improvement principles and methodology;
• Eligible to work in Canada.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's Degree in Nursing;
• American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Surgical Clinical Reviewer (ACS NSQIP SCR) Training Certification;
• Excellent computer skills - familiarity and comfort with MS Office 365 applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams);
• Self directed and works independently;
• Databased entry and/or management experience;
• Proficiency in English and French oral expression (level 4 - advanced) and comprehension (level 4 - advanced).
