Job summary

Make a Future / Qualicum School District is seeking on-call/casual Education Assistants to support students across Qualicum School District. Shifts may run from 8:00am to 3:15pm, with no guaranteed hours. Responsibilities include assisting staff, supervising students, and preparing instructional materials.

Applicants should hold an Education Assistant certificate/diploma, POPARD autism module, CPI certification, and possibly a Level 1 Food Safe certificate. A BC Class 5 licence is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Education Assistant and Community Support Program certificate or diploma from a recognized institution, including POPARD autism course.
  • Current CPI certification is required.
  • Possible Level 1 Food Safe Certification may be needed.
  • Class 5 BC driver’s licence may be required.
  • Ability to follow directions and work with students as part of the educational team.
  • Preferred experience in related field (6 months minimum).
  • Training in using technology to support student learning.

Responsibilities

  • Assist professional staff in implementing programs with student(s).
  • Supervise students in the classroom, on school grounds and field trips.
  • Support social-emotional learning and peer connections; refer to counselors as needed.
  • Prepare materials for students under direction of teachers or learning support staff.
  • Provide personal care under supervision as required.
  • Contribute to Individualized Education Plans and Support Plans.
  • Participate in professional development and training related to the position.

Qualicum School District is centrally situated on east Vancouver Island and covers the area of Nanoose Bay to Bowser and spans from Errington across the Strait of Georgia to Lasqueti Island. We serve a student population of approximately 4700 students. Qualicum School District consists of eight elementary schools (Grades K-7), two secondary schools (Grade 8-12), an alternate school (PASS/Woodwinds) and a Distributed Learning program to support home-learning families called the Collaborative Education Alternative Program (CEAP). False Bay School on Lasqueti Island is entirely off-grid with an immense solar project recently completed. JOB TITLE: Spare Education Assistant

Seeking on call/casual Education Assistants for school support throughout Qualicum School District. Please note the hours of work could range from 8:00am - 3:15pm. Please note there are no guarantee of hours as this is an on call/casual position.

JOB FUNCTION: An employee in this classification performs routine tasks and/or specific personal and/or instructional support for student(s).

REPORTING TO: Directly reports to the Principal or designate. Indirectly reports to District Principal, Learning.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
  1. 1. Assists professional staff in implementing programs with student(s).
  2. 2. Assists professional staff in supervising student(s) in the classroom, on the school grounds and on school day field trips.
  3. 3. Provides support for social emotional learning and as appropriate peer to peer connections. Referral to Counsellors and Child and Youth Care Workers.
  4. 4. May assist professional staff in supervising student(s) on overnight school field trips.
  5. 5. May assist with the food program.
  6. 6. May be required to transport students on occasion.
  7. 7. Assists with noon hour supervision.
  8. 8. Prepares materials for student(s) with whom the assistant works, as directed by classroom teachers or learning support staff.
  9. 9. Provides instructional and/or functional curriculum support for student(s), as directed by classroom teachers or learning support staff.
  10. 10. Provides support for student(s) using visual tools and/or augmentative communication devices.
  11. 11. Provides personal care (e.g. toileting, feeding, specific medical procedures) for student(s) under the supervision of professional staff.
  12. 12. Assists in providing for the physical health and safety, where directed, of student(s).
  13. 13. Participates as a member of student(s) instructional support team as required.
  14. 14. Contributes feedback or information towards the development of Individualized Education Plan(s) and/or Support Plan(s), as requested by professional staff.
  15. 15. Participates in professional development activities and training related to the position.
  16. 16. Provides additional services as required such as medical care and non-violent crisis prevention management for individual student(s) under the supervision of professional staff (includes professional health care personnel).
  17. 17. Advises student(s), where and when appropriate, of school rules and assists in diffusion of potentially dangerous student behaviour.
  18. 18. Assists individual student(s) when help is solicited.
  19. 19. Performs other job-related duties.
REQUIRED ABILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS
  1. 1. An Education Assistant and Community Support Program certificate or diploma from a recognized institution, including Introduction to Autism Course (30 hours) from the Provincial Outreach Program for Autism and Related Disorders (POPARD), or equivalent and current CPI certification.
  2. 2. May need level 1 Food Safe Certification.
  3. 3. May need class 5 BC driver’s licence.
  4. 4. Ability to follow directions and work as a member of the educational team.
  5. 5. Ability to work effectively with student(s).
  6. 6. Preferred minimum of (6) six months successful experience working in a related field.
  7. 7. Training and/or experience in using technology to support student(s) learning.
  8. 8. Valid Emergency First Aid Certificate.
  9. 9. Specialized curricular knowledge may be required, e.g. high school level math/or science, working knowledge of shops and /or fluency in a second language.
