Job summary

Qualicum School District seeks a School Meals Worker to support breakfast, lunch and snacks at Springwood Elementary School. The role is 22.50 hours per week, 10 months per year, school days only, commencing as soon as possible.

The successful candidate will ensure food safety, assist with meal service, and maintain records while upholding respect and dignity for all students. Reporting to the District Principal, Early Learning and Child Care.

Qualifications

  • Must have Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Food Safe Level 1 and 2 certification required.
  • Two years related experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding students and program.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational, time-management and problem-solving skills.
  • Responsible Adult Certificate is an asset.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License.
  • Nutritional background or related certification is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Supports planning and development of menus and nutritional options with local sourcing where possible.
  • Adheres to BC Ministry of Education Guidelines for Food and Beverage Sales in BC Schools, WorkSafe BC, and health regulations.
  • Monitors food consumption and student preferences.
  • Prepares and sorts lunches by division and ensures timely distribution.
  • Stores unused portions per health regulations.
  • Assists with meal service and clean-up.
  • Supervises students, explains procedures to helpers/runners.
  • Copies and distributes monthly program newsletters.
  • Creates and maintains participant records and lists.
  • Communicates with students and staff.

About Qualicum School District

Qualicum School District is centrally situated on east Vancouver Island and covers the area of Nanoose Bay to Bowser and spans from Errington across the Strait of Georgia to Lasqueti Island. We serve a student population of approximately 4700 students. Qualicum School District consists of eight elementary schools (Grades K-7), two secondary schools (Grade 8-12), an alternate school (PASS/Woodwinds) and a Distributed Learning program to support home-learning families called the Collaborative Education Alternative Program (CEAP). False Bay School on Lasqueti Island is entirely off-grid with an immense solar project recently completed. JOB TITLE:

School Meals Worker

JOB FUNCTION:

The School Meals Worker play a vital role in students' lives by preparing and distributing breakfast, lunch and/or snacks program to school-based students as needed and ensuring respect, equity and dignity for all within legal and regulatory requirements.

REPORTING TO:

Report to the District Principal, Early Learning and Child Care.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK:
  • 1. Supports the planning and development of menus and nutritional options, including food ordering and quantities, using local sources where possible.
  • 2. Ensure the BC Ministry of Education Guidelines for Food and Beverage Sales in BC Schools, WorkSafe BC, safe food practices and any other applicable laws or health regulations are adhered to at all times.
  • 3. Monitors the amount of food consumption and student food likes and dislikes.
  • 4. Prepares and sorts lunches to division categories and ensure timely distribution to participants.
  • 5. Ensure unused portions are sorted and stored according to health regulations.
  • 6. Helps with meal service and clean up.
  • 7. Student Supervision including explaining procedures to helpers/runners.
  • 8. Photocopy and distribute monthly newsletter about program to all students.
  • 9. Create and maintain records and lists of all participants of program
  • 10. Communicate with students, staff and others
REQUIRED ABILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 1. Grade 12
  • 2. Food Safe Level 1 and 2 Certification.
  • 3. Two year’s related experience within the past five-year period.
  • 4. Proficiency using Microsoft Office.
  • 5. Ability to ensure confidentiality related to students and the program.
  • 6. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • 7. Effective organizational, time management and problem-solving skills.
  • 8. Responsible Adult Certificate will be considered an asset.
  • 9. Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License
  • 10. Nutritional background or certification is considered an asset.
