JOB SUMMARY:

The Skate Shop Attendant operates the skate shop, issues and maintains skates and helmets and supports safe, welcoming and reliable public skating services. The incumbent provides clear information to Recreation Complex users, assists with patron supervision and performs related duties as required.

As a condition of employment, the incumbent is required to obtain and maintain clear RCMP Criminal and Vulnerable Sector checks.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Training:

Must meet the minimum legal age and employment eligibility requirements applicable to the duties of the position, including any requirements related to workplace safety, supervision, equipment use and hours of work. Advanced skating ability. Occupational First Aid Basic Certificate. A.E.D. training. W.H.M.I.S. Certificate.

Based on the nature of the duties and contact with vulnerable persons, this position is defined by the City of Powell River as a position of trust and requires a satisfactory RCMP Criminal Check and Vulnerable Sector Check as a condition of employment.

Experience: Three (3) months’ experience in customer service, recreation support, child supervision or a related public-facing environment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Considerable knowledge of safe skating practices, rink rules and routine skate shop procedures in a public recreation environment. Demonstrated skill in supervising patrons, supporting safe participation and responding to routine questions in a clear and respectful manner. Ability to safely operate skate shop equipment, issue skates and helmets and demonstrate the proper care and use of this equipment. Working knowledge of basic skate and helmet maintenance, including recognizing equipment concerns that require referral to the Supervisor. Ability to administer first aid within the scope of required training and follow established incident reporting procedures. Demonstrated skill in maintaining clean and orderly work areas through light maintenance duties such as sweeping, mopping and surface cleaning. Ability to exercise sound judgment, tact and patience when working with children, families and the public. Strong communication skills support safe service delivery, teamwork and positive interactions with internal and external contact. Ability to follow safe work procedures, attend required safety training and report hazards, injuries and near misses promptly. Ability to work within and contribute to a collaborative, high performing team environment. Ability to learn and apply changing systems, procedures and policy requirements, support service continuity and approach work and relationships in a culturally sensitive and inclusive manner.

PAY RATE:

This is a union position with the current pay rate of $31.49 per hour as outlined in the Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 798 Collective Agreement.

HOURS OF WORK:

Varied schedule including daytime, evening and weekend shifts.
