Job summary

Fort McMurray Catholic Schools is seeking a term full-time Educational Assistant to support students in Grades 1–6 at Saint Kateri Catholic School in Fort McMurray. The role focuses on cognitive, communication, physical, and social development, under the guidance of teachers and a multidisciplinary team.

Responsibilities include implementing teacher-directed programs, documenting progress, using assistive technologies, and supporting behaviour plans.

Qualifications

• Educational Assistant Certificate or Diploma.
• May be required to take SMG training for safe interventions (similar to NVCI).

Responsibilities

• Support students' growth in cognition, communication, physical and social development.
• Support and/or implement teacher directed programming.
• Work collaborative under guidance of teacher, CST and members of a multi-disciplinary team.
• Complete student or safety documentation, if directed by supervisor.
• Implement specialist strategies (OT, PT, SLP, etc) to achieve goals.
• Implement behaviour management and educational strategies that facilitate student learning.
• Communicate effectively with students using age-appropriate positive reinforcements and school behaviour strategies.
• Observe student behaviour with focus on positive outcomes and mitigate negative ones.
• Provide high level of structure to facilitate completion of learning outcomes.
• Work and play at the student’s physical level of activities.
• Provide support in adaptive and learning technologies using various devices and programs, including speech and non-verbal communication.
• Successfully implement the Positive Behaviour Plan (PBP), if required.
• Swim program – able to swim 50 meters, level 1 and 2.
• Medical procedures support (catheter, tube feeding, feeding and swallowing, toileting or diabetic monitoring may be required).
• Understand and support modified curriculum.
• Work with and support students with Autism or complex medical needs.
• Physically handle and transfer students when necessary.
• Lift and move students as needed.
• Provide school-directed indoor and outdoor supervision.
• Follow health and safety requirements as directed by supervisor.
