Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY :

The role operationally supports the Store Manager in overseeing daily routine tasks to provide uninterrupted service in various aspects of the Thrift Store activities. Otherwise, this role acts as a Sales Associate.

Accountabilities

The incumbent may perform all, some, or similar range of duties.

  • Interact with customers / donors in a positive, friendly, and courteous manner.
  • Protect the integrity of all donated items.
  • Responsible for accurate completion of all customer transactions including cash and debit sales.
  • Contribute to meeting store budgets by maintaining customer service standards.
  • Opening and closing of store following store procedures when required.
  • Process raw materials by loading / unloading, sorting, packing, pricing and storing donations.
  • Possess knowledge of stock in order to respond to customer enquiries by phone / in person.
  • Pay particular attention to store security, by monitoring activity within the store.
  • Handle the merchandise in a safe and organized manner; assist in stock rotation.
  • Contribute to the control of inventory by receiving, sorting, and pricing as per directions.
  • Assist with store layout plans to attract customers, which include window displays and merchandise displays; ensures attractiveness of the store through “Tidy Maintenance : ”.
  • Replenish inventory levels based on supervisor’s directions.
  • Remove inventory from sales floor as directed.
  • Maintain the proper sorting and processing of all donated goods, ensuring compliance with quality standards.
  • Maintain an attractive organized appearance of the store, tidy up and restock shelves, clean, sweep, dust, and mop as necessary.
  • Abide by store policy and procedures.
  • Assist with inventory reconciliation (cycle counting).
  • Provide excellent service to guests and donors.
  • Act as a Team Lead / Working Supervisor for Store Associates only in the absence of the Store Manager.
  • May be required to show some operations and provide on-the-job-training to staff.
  • Maintains a safe and healthy work environment through compliance with Health & Safety regulations.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

Critical Relationship Management

Internal : NRO Administration, TS management and staff.

External : Donors, clients, contractors.

Managerial / Technical Responsibilities

Reports directly to the Store Manager.

Direct reports : None.

Financial And Material Management

May show others how to perform certain procedures.

  • Moderate material responsibility.
  • May occasionally handle petite cash.

Working Conditions

This is a permanent full time position.

  • Normal store environment.
  • Constant physical effort (such as stretching, lifting up to 30 pounds with no assistance, bending, twisting, pushing, standing, and walking).
  • Frequent exposure to fumes and dust and temperature fluctuations.
  • Adherence to established deadlines must be met.
  • Frequent amount of interpersonal conflict dealing with guests, donors, vendors, and employees.
  • Work is varied with periods of repetitious tasks.
  • Evening / Weekend store operations coverage vital.

Education, Experience And Qualifications

  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.

Alternative combination of education and Experience may be considered.

Education, Qualifications And Certifications

  • Completion of some high school.

Experience And Knowledge

  • Two years of experience in a store or warehouse environment.

Skills And Capabilities

  • Proven interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
  • Physically capable of lifting / carrying up to 30 lbs on a frequent basis with no assistance from others, which includes bending, twisting, pulling, pushing of product.

Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion.

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $18.14 to $22.68 with a maximum of $27.22.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
