Job summary

Ontario Northland Transportation Commission (ONTC) is seeking a Railway Car Technician for our Rouyn-Noranda operation. The role involves inspecting, maintaining, and repairing railway cars and components, with adherence to safety procedures and blueprints.

You will join a team of skilled professionals, perform diagnostics, operate cranes or forklifts as needed, and support a strong safety culture. Applicants must have a valid diploma and a railway certification, with readiness for shift work

Qualifications

• High School Diploma (OSSD) or GED required
• Certificate of Qualification as Railway Car Technician 268R or in final year of apprenticeship
• Must be mechanically inclined and able to work outdoors in all weather
• Available for shift work and able to work weekends
• Strong safety awareness and ability to follow procedures
• Good interpersonal and communication skills (oral & written)

Responsibilities

• Inspect, troubleshoot, repair and test railway passenger and freight cars and components
• Perform preventative maintenance and diagnostics on rail car equipment
• Read and follow blueprints and use hand tools and testing devices
• Operate overhead or mobile cranes and forklifts as needed
• Work in a safety-conscious environment and adhere to safety clothing and procedures
• Adapt to varying shift schedules and weather conditions

ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT : Railway Car Technicians inspect, maintain, repair, and remanufacture railway passenger cars, freight cars and their components MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES : Inspects, troubleshoots, repairs and tests rail car equipment Performs preventative maintenance work Works from blueprints Uses hand tools and various testing devices and instruments Operate equipment such as overhead or mobile cranes and forklifts to assist with assignments Adapts to new methods, processes, material and equipment Follows prescribed safety procedures including the use of safety clothing and equipment May work various shifts and on weekends and some work outdoors in adverse weather REQUIREMENTS : High School Diploma (OSSD) or General Education Diploma (GED) Certificate of Qualification as Railway Car Technician 268R or within final year of apprenticeship in the same identified trade Must be mechanically inclined Available for shift work Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment Knowledge of safety codes and has demonstrated ability to work in a safety conscious manner Ability to work outside in all weather conditions and walk on rough terrain Good interpersonal and communication skills (oral & written) Commitment to Health and Safety Must have a valid driver’s license APPLICATION PROCESS : The successful candidate will need to pass the following clearances: criminal record check, employment references and education verification.
