Job summary

Ontario Northland is seeking a Railway Car Technician in Cochrane to inspect, repair and remanufacture railway passenger and freight cars. You will perform preventative maintenance, work from blueprints, and operate cranes or forklifts as needed.

The role requires an apprenticeship or 268R certification, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to work in all weather and shifts. Safe work practices and teamwork are essential in this position.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma (OSSD) or GED.
  • Certificate of Qualification as Railway Car Technician 268R or in final year of apprenticeship.
  • Must be mechanically inclined.
  • Available for shift work.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • Knowledge of safety codes and a safety-conscious approach.
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions.
  • Good interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

REPORTS TO: Supervisor, Equipment Maintenance
DEPARTMENT: Rail Mechanical
LOCATION: Cochrane
REFERENCE: 300-36-27
RATE OF PAY: $40.55 per hour

ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT:
Railway Car Technicians inspect, maintain, repair, and remanufacture railway passenger cars, freight cars and their components
MAJOR DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Inspects, troubleshoots, repairs and tests rail car equipment
  • Performs preventative maintenance work
  • Works from blueprints
  • Uses hand tools and various testing devices and instruments
  • Operate equipment such as overhead or mobile cranes and forklifts to assist with assignments
  • Adapts to new methods, processes, material and equipment
  • Follows prescribed safety procedures including the use of safety clothing and equipment
  • May work various shifts and on weekends and some work outdoors in adverse weather
REQUIREMENTS:
  • High School Diploma (OSSD) or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Certificate of Qualification as Railway Car Technician 268R or within final year of apprenticeship in the same identified trade
  • Must be mechanically inclined
  • Available for shift work
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
  • Knowledge of safety codes and has demonstrated ability to work in a safety conscious manner
  • Ability to work outside in all weather conditions and walk on rough terrain
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills (oral & written)
  • Commitment to Health and Safety
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
