SENIOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR
MANHATTAN PLACE GROUP HOME
INTERNAL/EXTERNAL
PERMANENT FULL TIME - 40 HOURS/WEEK
Wednesday-Sunday 3pm-11pm (Monday Tuesday Off)
McMan Youth, Family and Community Services Association of Calgary and Area is an organization making a difference in the lives of more than 4,100 children, youth, adults and families annually. Manhattan Place is a community-based group home for youth who are referred through Children’s Services. This home provides a safe and stable living environment with individualized support and around the clock care for youth aged 12-17 years.Manhattan Place works closely with youth to strengthen relationships with their families and friends and foster connections in the community.
The Senior Youth Development Coordinator will practice within a trauma informed framework that is a strengths-based, relationship-based and embeds a youth development approach. The role of the Senior Youth Development Coordinator is to support day to day operations in the house, including ensuring high quality programing and facilitating staff development through mentoring and role modeling McMan’s practice foundations.The Senior Youth Development Coordinator also plays a key role in integrating a wraparound approach with Manhattan youth which aims to achieve positive outcomes by providing a creative and individualized team planning process to achieve goals.
Some of the key aspects of this role include:
  • Upholding a duty of care that prioritizes trauma-informed principles to address the complex needs of children and youth who have experienced significant trauma.
  • Recognizing and responding to trauma-related behaviours with sensitivity and understanding, emphasizing safety, cultural connectedness, and relationship development
  • Taking a lead on each shift to ensure all responsibilities during the shift are completed.
  • Accompanying and/or transporting youth to activities such as appointments, shopping, school, employment or leisure activities, or as required.
  • Supporting youth development through role modeling and teaching new skills.
  • Teaching and implementing DBT skills to strengthen coping strategies.
  • Implementing verbal crisis intervention skills to support de-escalation.
  • Providing support to staff through role modeling and coaching of day-to-day responsibilities, interactions, interventions, communication and appropriate completion of documentation in order to build staff competency.
  • Acting as the primary liaison for Manhattan for all youth communication, organizing case conferences, implementing a wraparound approach, as well as, supporting staff in understanding the wraparound process.
  • Facilitating regular wraparound meetings, safety planning, and engaging family and natural supports for up to three youth
  • Engaging the program Clinician, Indigenous Learning and Engagement Specialist, or other cultural representatives to support with the development of strategies to engage youth in exploring identity and cultural connections.
  • Supporting and championing organizational and program change initiatives in a way that maintains a positive work environment.
  • Supporting the Supervisor and program with day-to-day operations, such as scheduling, petty cash, occupational health and safety requirements, medication delivery, and critical incident debrief and review, as outlined and determined through ongoing discussions with the Supervisor and Manager.
The successful candidate will have:
  • A Diploma or Degree in Human Services
  • 2 to 5 years’ experience working with youth with complex needs in a group care setting
  • Knowledge of the Natural Supports and Trauma Informed Practice Frameworks
  • Knowledge of wraparound approach principles
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate relationships and connections where youth expand their personal support networks and find new and meaningful relationships.
  • Demonstrated skills in crisis intervention, conflict resolution, critical thinking and problem solving, as well as written and verbal communication skills.
  • A good understanding of how trauma, grief and loss can impact identity and connection with natural supports.
  • Understanding of expectations, principles and philosophy around transition planning
  • The ability to attend at minimum 2 staff meetings per month (these may fall outside of regular work hours)
  • Current standard First Aid Certification and Suicide Intervention Training
  • Valid Driver’s license and adequate insurance coverage (2 million dollars 3rd party liability)
  • 3 years of driving experience with a Class 5 license
  • Current Police and Child Intervention checks (current within 6 months)

Salary Range:$57,384 to $63,761 per year
