Job description

Senior Worker's Compensation Specialist - Contract

As a member of our Abilities and Wellness team, you will support the case management of WSIB/WCB/CNESST absences through an outsourced third-party vendor model. The WC Specialist will also ensure that cases are appropriately managed and appealed when feasible to reduce costs and maintain appropriate premium costs.

The incumbent is a trusted partner and subject matter expert for our HR business partners and managers on occupational absence and disability matters.

The role is responsible for coordinating plans for a safe and early return to work for our Associates, and to assist with workplace accommodations necessary to support their return and to proactively keep associates healthy and actively at work. In this role you will be able to manage the multiple demands of a full case load and effectively communicate with multiple internal and external stakeholders.

Specifically, You Will:

  • Manage a high volume of occupational claims and complex files, from start to return to full work duties (adjudication of occupational claims done by a third-party provider).
  • Partner with 3 rd party provider to develop or provide feedback on gradual or modified return to work plans.
  • Collaborate with HRBP, Associates, Managers, Insurance Company, Provincial Workers’ Compensation in returning associates to their own job, or appropriate meaningful modified work.
  • Act as an expert resource on occupational case management issues, providing guidance and support as needed for issues related, suspected, or claimed medical problems.
  • Provides WCB technical guidance to HR business partners and service delivery teams based upon appeals, particularly on highly complex or prolonged case.
  • In partnership with the third-party vendor, monitor the claims costs for each board to identify any risks and mitigation strategies.
  • Researches and assesses the budgetary and economic implications of provincial WCB policies and programs to identify critical issues in the Workers' Compensation area and provide updates on proposed actions, new trends and developments.
  • Partner with Finance to provide annual forecasting for WCB premiums and surcharges.
  • Provide analysis and reporting on program metrics for the occupational health management program.

Some of what you need:

  • Completion of post-secondary, preferably in a related field OR a combination of equivalent professional experience and training.
  • Bilingual - preference will be given to candidates who speak, read, and write French.
  • Demonstrated experience working with complex claims including WSIB/WCB/CNESST and appealing claims when necessary.
  • Demonstrated ability to take a leadership role in working through difficult and sensitive situations.
  • In depth knowledge of relevant legislation related to claims management; Human Rights Code, Occupational Health and Safety, and applicable Disability and WSIB/WCB/ CNESST Legislation.
  • Knowledge and experience working with 3 rd party disability management providers.
  • 5-7 years of progressive experience in case management including STD, LTD and WSIB/WCB/CNESST and workplace accommodation.
