Job summary

Sun Life is seeking an Underwriting Consultant in Canada for a hybrid role with work-from-home flexibility. You will analyze medical and financial data to determine Life and Critical Illness eligibility, using guidelines and professional judgement, while collaborating with advisors and reinsurers on complex cases.

You’ll maintain medical knowledge, adapt to new tools, and contribute to underwriting quality and innovation in a supportive, growth-oriented environment.

Qualifications

• Minimum 7 years of experience as an Individual Life Underwriter.
• ALU certificate or commitment to obtain; pursuing FALU/FLMI designations.

Responsibilities

• Analyze medical, personal, and financial information to assess eligibility for Life and Critical Illness insurance.
• Assess and classify risk using underwriting guidelines and professional judgement.
• Make timely, well-reasoned decisions within authority; co-sign when needed.
• Partner with reinsurers to negotiate outcomes on complex decisions.
• Communicate decisions clearly to advisors and physicians when required.
• Document decisions with clear supporting rationale.
• Drive continuous improvement in underwriting quality and efficiency.
• Stay current on underwriting approaches and risk factors.
• Embrace new tools to improve efficiency.
