Job summary

Shermco Canada is seeking a Protection and Control Technician IV for field-based work across Canada, primarily in British Columbia. The role leads complex testing, commissioning, and maintenance of protection and control systems and serves as the technical authority on projects.

The position mentors technicians, resolves advanced system issues, and coordinates outage strategies while ensuring safety and quality in field operations. Travel throughout BC and possibly other locations is required.

Qualifications

Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Power and Controls, or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
Seven+ years of protection and control testing, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting experience.
Advanced knowledge of microprocessor-based relays, communications, and substation automation.
Experience leading major substation commissioning, outage, or maintenance projects.
Strong ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues.

Responsibilities

Lead testing, commissioning, startup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of complex protection and control systems.
Serve as the lead field technician on major substation, utility, industrial, and renewable energy projects.
Test advanced protection schemes including line current differential, distance, bus differential, and more.
Direct outage planning, testing strategies, verification, and commissioning activities.
Diagnose relay, SCADA, communications, automation, and control-system issues.
Review settings, protection philosophies, schematics, and commissioning plans for accuracy.
Lead root-cause investigations and recommend corrective actions.
Act as the primary technical contact for customers and field teams.
Develop and improve testing procedures, standards, and field practices.
Mentor and train technicians while ensuring safety and quality.
Support project schedules and customer expectations through field leadership.
Provide technical expertise for customer relationships and business development.
