Job summary

Shermco Canada is seeking a Protection and Control Technician IV to lead complex testing, commissioning and troubleshooting of protection and control systems in field projects across Canada. You will mentor junior technicians and act as the technical authority on major substations for utilities, industrials and renewables.

The role emphasizes field leadership, safety, quality, and client-facing responsibilities, with opportunities to advance expertise in SCADA, relays, and substation automation.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent.
  • 7+ years in protection and control testing/maintenance.
  • Expertise with microprocessor-based relays and substation automation.
  • Knowledge of utility/industrial protection-system design and commissioning.
  • Experience leading major substation projects.
  • Ability to diagnose complex technical issues independently.
  • Strong leadership, mentoring and customer-facing experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities

  • Lead testing, commissioning, startup and troubleshooting of complex systems.
  • Act as lead field technician on major substations and projects.
  • Test protection schemes such as line differential, distance, bus protection.
  • Direct outage planning and commissioning activities.
  • Diagnose relay, SCADA, and communications issues.
  • Review protection philosophies and relay settings for accuracy.
  • Lead root-cause investigations and recommend corrective actions.
  • Serve as primary technical contact for customers and teams.
  • Develop/testing procedures and engineering standards.
  • Mentor technicians and ensure safety and quality.
