The Senior Manager, Safety & Health for Vancouver Shipyard is responsible for managing Safety Advisors & Coordinators, implementing and maintaining the safety management system at Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyard. The role involves initiating and monitoring health & safety management systems, ensuring process, procedures, training, and work instructions are compliant and up-to-date, including participation in audits (. LRQA, COR, etc.).
Note: This position requires full on-site presence at 50 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver due to business needs.
What you’ll do
- Serve as an internal resource for divisional/operational Managers regarding health and safety policies, monitoring compliance levels and reporting to the Director, HSE.
- Implement best practices industry-wide, collaborate with other units and safety teams, and focus on improving key performance indicators at Vancouver Shipyard.
- Ensure the safety management system aligns with standards through coaching Managers and Supervisors, integrating safety duties into daily operations.
- Maintain and update the safety management system regularly to keep it current and relevant.
- Promote a safety culture in partnership with VSY management.
- Develop and recommend strategies for safety management systems, training programs, accident prevention, industrial hygiene, emergency response, fire safety, and injury reporting.
- Assist in developing and implementing safety training programs.
- Coach and manage Safety Coordinators and Officers, overseeing team performance and motivation.
- Establish action plans with Safety Coordinators, conducting quarterly reviews.
- Support regulatory compliance, including handling incident investigations and appeals related to WCB and prosecutions.
- Coordinate with Union leaders on safety policies.
- Develop procedures for consistent work activities and lead risk management efforts, hazard assessments, and task analysis training.
- Collaborate with Return to Work Programs to manage injuries effectively.
- Inspect worksites and vessel visits, engaging with employees to assess safety initiatives' reception and effectiveness.
- Maintain safety certifications for third-party audits.
- Network with external agencies like emergency services, fire departments, and WorkSafeBC to foster relationships and stay informed of regulatory changes.
- Guide managers on influencing safety culture through their actions and inform them of legislative updates.
- Oversee accident investigations, root cause analysis, and trend development to address common safety issues.
- Manage the Safety Corrective Action System, ensuring timely completion and linking it to incident data analysis.
- Keep the Health and Safety Manual and Master’s Standing Orders current and develop innovative communication methods.
- Research and implement specific projects as directed by the Director, Safety & Environment.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
What you’ll bring
- Diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety.
- Safety certifications such as CRSP, CSP, ROH, or CIH.
- Over 10 years of experience in safety management systems within complex, multi-union environments, preferably in shipbuilding, ship repair, heavy manufacturing, or marine transportation.
- Strong understanding of BC and Canadian health and safety regulations, including WorkSafe BC Regulations and the Workers Compensation Act.
- Proven ability to implement safety programs and policies in unionized settings.
- Knowledge of accident causation and prevention, audit processes, and safety management system standards (OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001, etc.).
- Proficient in MS Office, especially Excel and database management.
- Effective at working across all organizational levels and collaborating with managers and staff to uphold safety standards.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, leadership, decision-making, and judgment skills.
- Innovative thinker capable of influencing safety behavior and maintaining safety as a top priority.

The estimated salary range is $156,600 - $191,400, with final offers based on experience, skills, and internal equity. The company will present a competitive total compensation package.
