Job description

Senior Manager, Financial Reporting & Accounting

Toronto, ON | Canada

The Senior Manager, Financial Reporting & Accounting is primarily responsible for financial reporting, quarter-end and year-end IFRS close processes, and the quarterly and annual strategic planning processes.

What will your essential responsibilities include?

  1. Preparation and review of quarterly and annual statutory P&C returns and related financial statements for regulatory filing.
  2. Preparation of quarterly management discussion and analysis to explain variances and drivers of results.
  3. Ownership of the quarterly financial close process, including review of general ledger bookings.
  4. Development of statutory loss reserves in collaboration with the appointed actuary for quarterly and annual reporting.
  5. Act as the primary contact for internal and external audit functions.
  6. Assist in filing income, sales, and premium tax returns with the support of tax personnel.
  7. Lead the preparation of the Canadian technical and operational annual budget, including quarterly reforecasts as needed.
  8. Communicate financial results to business leaders and underwriters.
  9. Engage with stakeholders regarding significant changes/events affecting financial results.
  10. Coordinate with regulators, including responding to questions and requests.
  11. Review reconciliations and prepare complex reconciliations as required.
  12. Monitor expense drivers to ensure cost efficiency.
  13. Manage, coach, and mentor junior finance team members in Canada.
  14. Develop new reports and analyses to enhance internal reporting.
  15. Perform other ad hoc duties and projects as needed.
Working Relationships:
  • Canadian leadership and underwriters for financial analysis and variance commentary.
  • Corporate and Americas finance teams for deliverables and requests.
  • Internal and external auditors for annual and internal audits.
  • Service delivery team for statutory close and filings.
  • Regulators such as OSFI and provincial authorities.
  • Actuarial teams for reserves reporting and analysis.
  • Tax personnel for tax provisions and filings.
  • Accounts payable for vendor payments management.
  • Legal and compliance teams for regulatory updates and support.

You will report to the Head of Finance, Canada.

We’re seeking someone with these skills and abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting/finance or related field.
  • Recognized accounting designation, preferably CPA or equivalent.
  • Insurance accounting experience or equivalent education and experience.
  • Solid knowledge of IFRS and US GAAP related to property and casualty insurance.
  • Experience with IFRS 17 is an advantage.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Power BI; experience with Oracle E-Business Suite/Hyperion is a plus.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Initiative, accountability, integrity, flexibility, and excellent organizational skills.
