Job summary

The Government of Nunavut, through Nunavut Arctic College, invites applications for a Senior Instructor, Cooking Programs. You will provide leadership and oversight for apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship cooking programs across Nunavut, ensuring high-quality, industry-aligned training for adult learners.

Reporting to the Chair, Industry Training, you will manage program staff and budgets, develop curricula, and maintain accreditation.

Qualifications

• Completion of a Journeyperson Cook Certificate through apprenticeship.
• Ability to hold a Canadian Teaching Certificate or Adult Education Certificate.
• Two years of experience teaching vocational-technical students or mentoring apprentices.
• Three years of progressive industry experience in instruction.
• Two years of management or supervisory experience in a team.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chair, Industry Training, the Senior Instructor, Cooking Programs provides leadership and oversight for the planning, coordination, administration, and delivery of apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship cooking programs across Nunavut. The position plays a key role in supporting Nunavut Arctic College’s mandate to develop a skilled workforce by ensuring high-quality, industry-relevant training opportunities are available to adult learners throughout the territory.

The Senior Instructor is responsible for managing cooking program staff, curriculum development, accreditation requirements, training facilities, equipment and resources, as well as base-funded and third-party funded program budgets. Working closely with communities, government departments, industry partners, and apprenticeship authorities, the incumbent ensures programs meet educational, industry, and Red Seal standards while contributing to the successful implementation of Nunavut’s trades training strategy. The position also provides instructional leadership, fosters strong stakeholder relationships, and supports student success through effective program planning, delivery, and evaluation.

The Key Responsibilities Of This Position Are

• Lead the planning, coordination, and delivery of cooking programs across Nunavut.
• Supervise instructors and program staff, including recruitment, performance management, and professional development.
• Develop, maintain, and ensure accreditation of cook training curriculum and program materials.
• Manage program budgets, contracts, financial reporting, and operational resources.
• Monitor and evaluate program quality, student outcomes, and compliance with health, safety, and industry standards.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position are typically acquired through:

• Completion of a Journeyperson Cook Certificate obtained through apprenticeship training.
• The ability to hold, or be eligible to hold, a Canadian Teaching Certificate or a Certificate in Adult Education.
• Two (2) years of experience teaching vocational-technical students or mentoring apprentices, including instructional responsibilities related to the delivery of adult education programming;
• Three (3) years of progressive and relevant industry experience in the area of instruction.
• Two (2) years of management or supervisory experience within a team environment and experience teaching adults in learning settings.

Assets include a related post-secondary certificate, diploma, or degree, such as Adult Education; post-secondary teaching experience; and certifications in Explosive Activated Tools, WHMIS, and First Aid.

Short-listed candidates may undergo a vulnerable sector check as necessitated by the demographics of the learners’ participating in the program.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. The ability to communicate in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
