Job summary

Reporting to the Conservation Officer III (CO III), the Conservation Officer II (CO II) is responsible for delivering wildlife management, environmental protection, and renewable resource programs while enforcing territorial and federal legislation in accordance with the Nunavut Agreement. Working closely with the Hunters and Trappers Organizations (HTOs), harvesters, communities, and partner agencies, the CO II promotes conservation, public education, and responsible resource management that supports Nunavut’s mixed and traditional economy. Through strong relationships, effective enforcement, and community engagement, this role helps ensure the sustainable use of wildlife and natural resources for current and future generations.

The Key Responsibilities Of This Position Are

• Enforces wildlife and environmental legislation by conducting inspections, issuing licences and permits for tourism and outfitting operations, and exercising authority under applicable territorial and federal legislation.
• Supports wildlife conservation and resource management by assisting with departmental wildlife research and collaborating with HTOs to strengthen co-management and sustainable resource use.
• Promotes public awareness and stewardship by delivering education and training programs that foster conservation ethics, responsible harvesting practices, and compliance with legislation.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position are typically acquired through a College Diploma in Environmental Conservation, Renewable Resources Management, or a related field. A valid Class 5 driver's licence is also required, along with the ability to operate trucks, snowmobiles, and ATVs. The successful candidate must be eligible to obtain a Transport Canada-approved Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) and a Firearms Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) within six (6) months of employment.

The Following Qualifications Are Considered Assets

• First Aid and CPR certification;
• Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) certification;
• Experience with wilderness travel and survival skills;
• Education or experience in enforcement, licensing, and inspection techniques;
• Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP);
• Marine Emergency Duties (MED A3);
• Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification; and/or
• Boat, ATV, and/or snowmobile safety or proficiency course certifications.

This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
