Job summary

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina is seeking an experienced Data Center Infrastructure Engineer to design and deliver complex physical and cloud-based data center solutions. You will collaborate with IT and business stakeholders to assess requirements, ensure performance, and manage capacity to meet SLAs.

The role involves hybrid work with Durham HQ and remote options, and offers significant career development, security, and technology vendor engagements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or advanced degree; 5+ years of experience in related field; or 7+ years without a degree.
• Experience administering AWS cloud environments and enterprise Linux systems (RHEL 9, AIX) is a bonus.
• Hands-on infrastructure automation and configuration management with Ansible/Ansible Tower.
• Knowledge of patch management, vulnerability remediation, security best practices.

Responsibilities

• Independently plan and develop complex engineering designs for network, compute, telephony, platform, middleware and database solutions.
• Own and maintain technology currency and capacity planning in support of SLAs.
• Define hardware and software performance standards.
• As infrastructure SME, provide expertise in emerging technologies with strategic vendors.
• Participate in licensing, financial and capacity activities to optimize datacenter technology.
• Provide operational readiness through planning, coordination, and execution of performance tuning, incident resolution, and upgrades.
• Guide production incident solutions when required.
• Build relationships with architecture community to maintain roadmaps and standards.

Job Description

Responsible for the engineering of various and complex aspects of both physical and cloud hosted data center infrastructures which might include network, compute, storage, platform, middleware, database and telephony. Independently analyze current and future requirements to effectively design data center infrastructure, networking and telephony systems while determining design feasibility from both technical and economic perspectives. Develop and maintain technical standards, procedures and documentation in partnership with service partners as needed. Compile and analyze operational data and directs proof of technology to establish standard for new designs or modifications to existing equipment, systems, or processes. Independently partner and consult with varied technical, business, project and management staff to identify and plan, assess data center and cloud infrastructure designs, physical data center requirements and impacts and resolve design problems.

• Proactively provide information and ongoing consultation for IT and business areas as well as vendors directly or indirectly affected by the network or data center infrastructures.


• Execute the detailed infrastructure design of larger and/or more complex internal projects collaborating with IT stakeholders, service owners and partners.


• Provide operational readiness through the engineering, planning, coordination, and execution of performance and tuning analysis, systems support, incident and problem resolution, software installation, and upgrades.


• Provide detailed guidance and consultation in solutioning production incidents when required.


• Maintain appropriate standardized guidelines, work procedures and schedules for solution engineering within the data center environment to expedite workflow and ultimately improve efficiencies.


• Build collaborative relationships with the broader architecture community to effectively maintain technical roadmaps and provide input into strategies and standards related to area of specialization.


• Collaborate with vendors on infrastructure designs to ensure the final product is what was architected or designed.


• Provide new technology overviews to IT and Enterprise leadership at varied leadership forums.


• Provide direction and assistance to less experienced team members as needed.

What You Bring

• Bachelor's degree or advanced degree (where required)


• 5+ years of experience in related field.


• In lieu of degree, 7+ years of experience in related field.

Bonus Points

• Experience administering AWS cloud environments and enterprise Linux systems, including RHEL 9 and AIX.


• Hands‑on expertise with Ansible and Ansible Tower for infrastructure automation and configuration management.


• Experience utilizing Red Hat Satellite for system lifecycle management, patching, and compliance activities.


• Knowledge of patch management and vulnerability remediation processes in large-scale enterprise environments.


• Understanding of security best practices and vulnerability management methodologies to support system reliability and compliance.

Salary Range
