Job summary

Cenovus Energy is seeking a Senior Well Abandonment Geologist/Geoscience Technologist in Calgary, Alberta to lead advanced analyses, automate workflows, and guide remediation programs for a large well inventory. You will work with multidisciplinary teams to ensure regulatory compliance and budget stewardship, while advancing data-driven decision-making.

The role requires 8+ years in oil & gas abandonment or geology, P.Geo.

Qualifications

• Legally authorized to work in Canada.
• P.Geo. or Geoscience Technologist certification.
• 8+ years in oil and gas well abandonment or geology in upstream.
• Knowledge of AER and Sask MER directives for well abandonment.
• Familiarity with risk-based well management and regulatory compliance.
• Experience with advanced analytics, large datasets, and AI/digital tools for decision-making is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Identify innovative approaches to well abandonment and remediation, incl. automation and predictive analytics.
• Leverage data analytics and AI to improve prioritization, risk assessment, and portfolio management.
• Manage remediation portfolio by proposing annual wells for remediation with budget stewardship.
• Lead evaluations using cased-hole well log analysis with Abandonment Engineers.
• Develop and maintain data management practices for a large well inventory.
• Support automated reporting, dashboards and data visualization for performance tracking.
• Assist routine abandonment activities related to groundwater protection and cost optimization.
• Participate in industry associations and tech forums to share learnings.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to drive process improvements and tech adoption.
